Outlander season 3 news roundup: A video, promotion, and much more
Of course, the crew here at CarterMatt are working hard on getting some cool stuff set up for both before and after the premiere; for now though, let’s bring you a number of interesting stories that are a lot of fun.
Sam Heughan’s new interview – There’s an extensive new piece over on Collider that was originally conducted during filming, but just recently posted to their site. (Collider’s interview style is great for giving you a sense of the performer’s voice.) The quote that we’ll share with you here is Sam discussing some of where the story picks up for Jamie Fraser during Outlander season 3:
“I suppose [in] a slight departure from the books, we kind of pick up from where we left off. Jamie has lost Claire. He’s sent her back to the future. He goes to battle thinking he’s got only one thing left to do, and that’s to die by the side of his men. He doesn’t expect to survive. And so, when he does, it’s a bit of shock to him. Then going through the next few episodes, we see the effect that that has on Jamie, on him sort of living without Claire, and recovering from the trauma of the battle. But also sort of losing his life.
“So, it’s a slight departure from the books, which is that, obviously in Diana’s book, Jamie doesn’t remember the battle. And actually, in the battle, Black Jack Randall appears, and there was sort of the final showdown between them. It’s been a remarkable journey for Jamie, actually. It’s really interesting few episodes. First few episodes.”
Also, check out the photo that Heughan posted on Instagram — Outlander has an advertisement on the side of a building! If you’ve been to Los Angeles or New York before, you know that these ads are a staple of being in heavily-populated areas. It’s very cool to the see the show’s key art in such a big way.
Talking costumes
There’s another great interview piece over at Entertainment Weekly that features costume designer Terry Dresbach discussing Claire Fraser’s ship costume, something that you can see in the photo at that link. It’s a very cool style and it’s different from what we’ve seen her wear in Scotland before. As Dresbach points out, the difference is very much intentional to show the character’s growth:
“When we first see Claire, she is all buttoned up and nervous about meeting Jamie for the first time after 20 years … Then we see this slow unraveling into this strong, confident, very sexy woman who is on that boat wearing a white blouse, a big big leather belt, and a billowing skirt. [Caitriona Balfe] looks amazing in that costume. It’s romantic beyond romantic.”
Now that you’ve seen the outfit, here’s the hard part: Waiting until the second half of the season to actually see the story unfold. You’ve gotta get to the Print Shop scene before anything else happens!
