The Bold Type season 2 renewal odds: Will it return to Freeform?

Leading up to tonight’s finale, now seems like the right time to discuss The Bold Type season 2 renewal odds. After all, the future of the show currently hangs in the air! We’re still waiting to learn one way or another if Freeform wants to bring it back, and there’s not a clear indication one way or another.

The bad news is that in terms of pure live+same-day ratings averages, otherwise known as the sort of things shows need more than anything else, the numbers are less than stellar. As of right now, the first season is averaging just a 0.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic and slightly over 300,000 viewers. This puts the show in the demo slightly ahead of another summer show in Stitchers, but behind the other summer dramas that the network is airing including The Fosters and Shadowhunters. In total viewers, to date it is averaging a smaller total than any of these three shows.

Here is the good news: There are so many other ways in which viewers could watch this show, including via their DVR or streaming directly from the network. This show appeals to a generation that probably does not put a huge premium on watching live programming; therefore, its ratings likely balloon out when you consider some of the other methods in which people are checking it out. Its ratings are actually fairly comparable to another show in Famous in Love that Freeform already renewed, so we’re very much curious to see if that could also mean good things here. Unfortunately, there are two clear differences between those shows.

1. In the case of Famous in Love, it actually made the majority of its episodes available for binge-watching right away. Therefore, there are probably plenty of people out there who watched the show online before the episodes aired, and the lower ratings were a reflection of that.

2. Famous in Love season 2 also has going for it the presence of a top-level star in Bella Thorne, someone who gets a wide array of headlines. It’s easier to ultimately sell that show around her, since the publicity fuels itself a little more.

Would we like to see The Bold Type season 2 on Freeform? Certainly, and we especially want to see Katie Stevens have a consistent TV gig after losing Faking It a few seasons into its run. Unfortunately, nothing in this TV business is assured, and this is just an active situation that we’re going to have to watch over the next couple of months.
