Ray Donovan season 5 episode 3 spoilers: The Natalie James shooting aftermath

When Ray Donovan season 5 episode 3 airs on Showtime on Sunday, August 20, there’s a big question at the center: Who is Ray? How has he evolved over the past few months, and what sort of person does he want to be now?

What we appreciate about this show is that executive producer David Hollander and the writers are not going to construct it in such a way that gives you a sense that Abby is significant not only to Ray in the past, but also Ray in the present. She doesn’t just go away this season because the character is dead. She’ll play a part in this story in many different ways, and not just in the sort that you saw on Sunday night’s new episode.

Moving into the next installment, the case of Natalie James is going to be in the forefront once more. The stakes are high for this given the reputation that James has, coupled of course with how much she stands to lose in the event that she is put behind bars for it. This case should be, as a result of all of this, one of the most challenging ones that Ray has tackled. It still may not hold a handle to one of the toughest ones of all for the character: How to handle himself.

Ray Donovan season 5 episode 3 synopsis – “Ray cleans up the mess left after Natalie shot her husband. At home, Ray struggles to reconnect to his family and complete anger management. Meanwhile, Terry visits Conor at military school; and Frank Barnes visits Mickey and it threatens to sink him back into a life of violence.”

all of this sounds like it’s got the makings of a very strong story, given that you’re combining some of the personal stuff with Ray doing some of what Ray does best. Plus, we also do think that it makes sense for Mickey to be tempted by some of his old life, just from the vantage point of seeing whether or not it really ever changes. Is he turning over a new leaf out of some sort of desire to do so, or is this more him reacting to circumstance? We’re curious to learn when this episode airs in full.

The promo below focuses mostly on the Natalie James shooting, both in terms of what happened and some of the creepy aftermath to it. Don’t be surprised if there is a lot of ambiguity in the episodes ahead…
