Outlander season 3 spoilers: New Caitriona Balfe – Sam Heughan stills
Starting with the photo above, you can one of several new images of the show premiering on Starz Sunday, September 10. These images were released as a part of the show’s recently-launched community, which you can read about over at the link here. (There’s been some controversy regarding a spoilery photo that was accidentally released, but we’re not going to discuss that here.)
Most of these photos have some variations of them in one form or another out there already, but we love the one above as a demonstration of Claire Fraser in contemplative thought. She’s reading the newspaper — or, shall we say that she is distracted by the newspaper. We do feel in some ways that finding distractions is one of her primary objectives during her life with Frank — ways to tune out the noise that plays in her head about Jamie Fraser and love lost. Her advancement in the medical field is one; Brianna, meanwhile, is one of the few ways that she has where she can feel properly connected to him.
The more photos that you see of Caitriona Balfe’s character during this time, the more urgency you feel around her returning to Jamie during her “present” with Bree and Roger.
A few other photos
Here, you have another reminder of the perpetual strain that exists between Claire and Frank. In almost every photo that you see of the two characters, you see either anger, discord, or some sort of distance between the two parties. Tobias Menzies is going to be challenged once again with this material given all of the emotions that are likely swirling within this character; luckily, we know that he’s more than up for taking it on.
Speaking of Menzies, isn’t this a Black Jack sighting? The Battle of Culloden is going to be the main event in the story for Jamie (Sam Heughan) during the early part of the third season, and this photo showcases him within the thick of the battle. Could there be resolution to the long-simmering Jamie / Jonathan Randall conflict? We don’t want to give anything away for book readers, but this battle will be pivotal in further determining Jamie’s future in relation to him.
The final photo that we have doesn’t necessarily showcase all that much in terms of specifics, but it does give you a great sense of the scale of the battle and production’s interpretation of it. What was very smart about the way this was made was that with that fog, you’re allowing an epic battle to somehow feel small and intimate. You’re focusing on the characters, and also creating this in a way that feels feasible to your show’s budget.
