Outlander season 3: See Caitriona Balfe, Sam Heughan in new featurette
Well, here’s some irony — or maybe we willed this video into existence one way or another. The new featurette below is one of the most comprehensive looks at the new season to date, and it features series stars Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan detailing some of what is coming next on an epic, romantic batch of episodes. It’s something that we anticipated we’d see at some time, and it seems as though Starz wanted this out there for the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour today. (There’ll be more to discuss in terms of that event tomorrow; stay tuned.)
The video begins with Balfe discussing the big reveal at the end of season 2 — Jamie Fraser did not die at Culloden — and everything this means. This knowledge serves as her motivation to go back in time to find him, but in doing so, she still faces many questions. Take, for example, how she finds him and whether or not he will be the same person she remembers. Jamie for many years was haunted by a ghost of her, and a pining that she would somehow find a way to come back. With the help of his family, Fergus, and others, he eventually does find a path forward, but that does not mean that he forgets about Claire in the slightest.
You see sweeping visuals in the featurette, Claire during multiple phases of her life, a carriage, a gunshot, familiar faces, and a little bit of Culloden and its aftermath. (How they filmed this battle is remarkable.) If you are a reader of the Diana Gabaldon books, there is plenty in here that you can speculate about! Since we like these articles to appeal to readers and non-readers alike, that is all we will say on that subject … though we are very much excited to see the full representation of the Voyager story.
There is still quite a bit that has not been presented in any of the footage that we’ve seen so far, especially in terms of Jamie and Claire at sea — footage that was filmed earlier this year in South Africa. That’s why there is still validity to what we wrote earlier; it could still be possible that there is something more coming beyond this.
Even if there’s not, though, we have the utmost gratitude to Starz for all of the fantastic teases that they have sent in our direction over the past two weeks. They have made the Droughtlander a little more tolerable, though we figure that the final month and a half of it will move at a crawl now that our excitement is at a peak!
