American Horror Story season 7 spoilers: Twisty the Clown returning (somehow)

Twisty the CLown

Right when you get Twisty the Clown finally out of your nightmares, this news comes in: He’s returning to American Horror Story.

In a new post on Instagram (see below), executive producer Ryan Murphy confirmed that the infamous villain from American Horror Story: Freak Show will be around for season 7, albeit in the form of a comic … that’s at least what Murphy is willing to give us. It’s possible that the character cold be around further, given that there could easily be copycats given that in this universe, he’s obviously infamous.

If you recall, what made Twisty at first so menacing was that he was the terrifying figure without clear motivations, and he would kill almost without regard for anything. However, when we did start to see more of his backstory, it was one of the most unbelievably tragic things about the entire season. His episodes coupled with “Orphans,” the story of Pepper, were the best episodes of Freak Show and some of the best of the entire season.

The risk with conjuring up Twisty is that you have to find a way to match the expectations that were there the first time, and there’s also the question as to whether or not you bring back John Carroll Lynch to inhabit that role. His performance was one of the most underrated parts of the character, which often just gets attention because of the mask and the character’s actions.

Beyond all of that…

The presence of Twisty is mostly curious because the theme for season 7 is the Presidential Election, and his mythology doesn’t superficially fit in there … unless of course this is some sort of commentary about how politicians are all a bunch of clowns in some way. (It’s not hard to see that argument being made by someone out there.)

The only thing that we explicitly hope for when it comes to this season and the characters involved is that they prove themselves to be more than just shock value. We understand how easy it is to just respond with rage to the current political climate, but in order to be truly remembered, you really do have to stand for something greater. That’s one of the only ways that you can start to have more hope for the future, and have discussions that are actually meaningful and last on some level.

What do you think Twisty the Clown could bring to season 7?
