Doctor Who season 10 episode 6 spoilers: The pope and the truth

Doctor Who season 10 episode 6

In Doctor Who season 10 episode 6 airing on BBC One next week, there will be a prime opportunity to witness something truly crazy. Also, it’s only something that would be attempted on a show like this — an entire story about a forbidden text hidden within the Vatican that causes people to die the moment that they read it. It’s hard to determine on first glance if this is a reference to either a Dan Brown novel or something within the Doctor Who universe.

“Extremis” is the title for this episode, and it sounds both incredibly entertaining and the sort of thing that is going to tick off people who feel like this is some sort of religious commentary.

Doctor Who season 10 episode 6 synopsis – “‘The Veritas. The truth. Truth so true you can’t live with it. Is that looking into hell… or seeing the light?’ Everyone who has ever read the Veritas has been found dead. In a forbidden library at the heart of the Vatican, the pope urges the Doctor to read the ancient text – but can he handle the truth?”

One other interesting comparison here could be to The Ring, with the whole idea of looking at something and then dying not all too long afterwards. All of this suggests that this will be a fun, twisted, mind-bendy story like no other that will give you a sense of excitement wonder.

From this vantage point, the biggest cause of applause is simply the series continuing to find ways at this point to innovate and surprise. There are SO many episodes out there within the Doctor Who universe, so finding a way to do something original has to be far more difficult than it was a few seasons ago. Also, the show has another creative challenge this time in finding a way to present both the Vatican and the world of the church in a manner that feels authentic both to reality and to the show itself.

One other thing that is interesting to remember is that this episode, by the end of it, will mark the halfway point of the season — the final one for Peter Capaldi. The tension will only build from here.
