2 Broke Girls canceled at CBS; The Son renewed for season 2 at AMC
This news was first reported by Deadline, and it appears that one of the big issues for the show is studio ownership. Warner Bros. TV owns the show entirely, and with that, there was little incentive for CBS to front costs and put on a show with declining ratings on the air. The show did end in such a way that suggested that Max and Caroline had a successful future ahead of them, so maybe consider that a sign of hope and prosperity for their future.
The big shock with the cancellation today mostly comes from looking back and where the show premiered. It started following the premiere of Two and a Half Men following the departure of Charlie Sheen, and with that, its ratings were MONSTER. Unfortunately, it just couldn’t sustain them. It was crude in a way that its predecessor was, but in between various timeslot changes and a lack of overall buzz (the show just couldn’t get much attention beyond its core audience), it just couldn’t sustain anything.
It’s easy to feel for the show’s fans, especially with a run of this long. 2 Broke Girls will live on in syndication, but without a proper series finale in the end.
The Son is coming back – As for more positive news, AMC will be bringing back the Pierce Brosnan western series for another go. This is a challenging show given its Saturday timeslot, but in between the live+same day ratings and some of the DVR ratings, there is clearly enough here that the network liked to want to bring the show back. Congratulations to the cast and crew! Also, congratulations to all fans of the western genre; this remains such a difficult genre to program, given that it’s so nostalgic and mostly appealing to the gen X / baby-boomer crowd. It’s hard to convince young viewers to give it a try, even if it’s very much enjoyable
