Saturday Night Live: Melissa McCarthy talks Sean Spicer impression

Sean Spicer impression

Melissa McCarthy’s Sean Spicer impression is now pretty much the stuff of Saturday Night Live legend. It’s viewed by many as one of the greatest impressions in the history of the show, and that’s only after two appearances! We know that we can only imagine how much more we’ll love it when the show comes back on the air a little bit later this spring. (Remember that McCarthy is going to be hosting the show in May.)

If you’re interested in getting the origin story for McCarthy’s impression, she did her part to explain that in a new interview with Ellen DeGeneres, one that also featured her husband in Ben Falcone. In this interview, she explained a little bit further precisely what makes the impression work — and also how similar she actually looks to the White House Press Secretary when she’s dressed up in costume.

Here’s one of the oddest things about the entire impression to us — the fact that Spicer is even notable enough to have this happen. When was the last time that a Press Secretary generated this much attention? Then again, SNL has been able to make stars out of almost everyone when it comes to Donald Trump’s cabinet. Kate McKinnon’s done impressions of Kellyanne Conway, Nancy DeVos, and Jeff Sessions, and we’ve of course also seen the Skeletor-like creature that is their Steve Bannon. The show does also have a Mike Pence, but they haven’t really done too much with him so far. Of course, the icing on top of the cake is Alec Baldwin’s Donald Trump, and we assume that he’s going to be turning up a few more times before the end of the season. (We do imagine there will be crying in the streets in the event that Baldwin ever leaves this show.)

McCarthy better enjoy the Spicer impression while she can — in general, we don’t find that most Press Secretaries have a long shelf life in the White House. There were three of them that served during the term of Barack Obama in office, and there were four before that who served under Bill Clinton. (See? We’re not even suggesting that Spicer will be fired or anything. We can be nice!)
