This Is Us season 1 finale: How Jack and Rebecca met

This Is Us season 1 finale -

Tonight, the This Is Us season 1 finale aired on NBC, and over the story of “Moonshadow,” and it was effectively the story of a meeting more so than a parting. The expectation entering the hour was pretty clear and understandable, that this could be a story that gives you a further sense of how Jack died. The show decided to not travel in that direction further.

Instead, we went back to both before Jack and Rebecca were together, and then also to the night that Jack stumbled in drunk and ruined her performance with Ben. Ben admitted to trying to kiss Rebecca, and Jack’s outburst basically kept the performance from ever really happening. After things went south there and Rebecca had to drive him home, they had the most nuclear fight of their entire relationship. it was enough for Rebecca and Jack to realize that it was better for him to go and stay with Miguel for a while.

None of this seemed to directly connect to Jack’s death, but we learned that at around the time he died, he left to go and be at another place.

In the past, we saw Jack and Rebecca’s first meeting happen when he was at a bar, and where she decided to go and perform. It was hearing her sing that kept him from going down a dark path. It was the thing that effectively saved him from a horrible life. The song? “Moonshadow.” (If you want to hear the full version, you can do so over at the link here.)

Other big decisions

Kate decided that, upon looking at a picture of her mother, she wanted to sing. Meanwhile, Kevin attempted to piece together his personal life, and Randall remembered William. He got to know someone he truly cared about only to recently lose him. This made him ultimately realized that he wanted to adopt a child himself.

Overall

This was a love story, and a rather wonderful one. It featured heartbreak at times, but also plenty of hope. Even when Jack departed after the fight, he made it clear precisely how much he loved her, and the faith that he had in the future. It was a simple, quiet finale, but an incredibly powerful one to go along with it. Consider this another reminder of how this is network TV’s best show.
