Why Longmire season 6 is needed now more than ever
Alas, Longmire season 6 isn’t going to be coming up on Netflix until we get closer to the fall, and that’s a long time to wait. While it will surely be worth it, these are the times we find ourselves longing for Walt Longmire and to dive into some of his cases and adventures.
The intention here is to not make this a political article, mostly because Longmire is not overtly a political show. There are themes within it like corruption and politics, but it doesn’t take a strong viewpoint and hammer it down your throat. In this era, that’s a very welcome change of pace. The stories that are paid attention to, such as terrible injustices in Native American laws and practices, feel more like universal travesties than subjects of debate.
Longmire is a throwback show. It’s nostalgic, it’s subtle, and that makes the heartfelt moments all the more profound. It’s a show about family, about friendship, and at times offering up a voice to characters and people who remain voiceless. You can get caught up in the vistas and it takes you to a simpler time, one where nature was an escape and not something that you see on your desktop background. It’s beautiful, and it has a lovely Americana quality to it.
While the problems that Walt and the Sheriff’s Department deal with are weighty problems, they’re also not your problems, and odds are that they are not altogether relatable to your problems. This helps to up the escapism factor even further. It allows for opportunities to dive into another case, another story, and another world even for just an hour at a time. It may even take you back to a different time in television where you were watching either Westerns or some good old-fashioned crime shows. In some ways, in terms of style and tone, this series is a hybrid of the two genres.
Truth is, we live in a pretty angry, cynical time. It doesn’t matter what you believe; this may be a true unifying principle nonetheless. Sometimes, something as simple as entertainment can bring about some unity and strengthen bonds that were broken. Longmire appeals to everyone, and it makes everyone feel a little bit better after just an episode or two.
If only there was a time machine here in 2017; alas, those are reserved at present for several other shows currently on the air (time travel is the new zombie). Fingers crossed that the series finds a way to get here quickly, and that we’re able to rely on repeats and remembrances to carry us the rest of the way. (If it will help, you can check out reviews, previews, and other features on Longmire over here.)
When will Longmire premiere?
While there’s no firm date released yet, we suspect September, most likely. We’ll let you know if further updates come out.

I have become increasingly frustrated by “Longmire” and fervently wish that the producers would take a “page” from the producers of “Bosch” and stick more closely to the plot lines and characters as developed by the author. The lead character is terrific. I’ll even buy into Henry Standing Bear even though Lou Diamond Philips bears virtually no resemblance to the character in the novels. And the female “leads” are characters with no discernable relationship to the characters as developed by Craig Johnson. All in all, I have become increasingly alienated. I just read Johnson’s new novella “The Highwayman”. What a wonderful opportunity it would be for the producers to capture the “true” Longmire.

Actually, I think Longmire is about police corruption and the dangers of letting personal fears and concerns overcome the rule of law. We see episode after episode of Walt pushing boundaries, ignoring the law, and encouraging his deputies to do the same thing. This show explores what happens when the legal system doesn’t work as it should for some of its citizens and how tempting it is to take the law into our own hands under those circumstances. Even good people get pulled into this dangerous territory to the detriment of themselves and those they care about. I think if the show actually embraced that, it would be even more powerful, but it tries to side-step the very reality it is creating. It is at its best when it reflects the ugly and difficult reality of people at odds with a system that often does not work. In that way, up until last season, it was a great show to watch to empathize with basically good people and to understand better how important it is to have rules and accountability, especially for those we trust the most. Watching the good acting and the (unevenly) good scripts can be compelling, not to escape the current difficult political culture, but to better understand it.

Very good show. Characters have issues like real people. The cast is one of the best on TV. One way to tell in my opinion is that you see them in other shows frequently. The only one that l haven’t seen any where else is the lead. I hope to see him in other roles.

I understand the frustration, but I’m grateful for six seasons given that so few even make it this far, especially in 2017 where there is such hyper-competition.

sorry hyper competition with some real stinkeroos. They had a winner and for what ever reason the decided to cancel a winner and a lot of what they are producing is simply c**p. Did you actually try to watch that hot mess, I think it was dear white people,…stinkeroo!

Longmire really opened my eyes to the horrors of inequality for the Native Americans. Sadly they only appear to be getting worse (referencing DAPL here) with little hope of improvement in this political era. How frustrating it must be to live like that. Mathias and Henry stand for the voices of the people within the limits imposed by the government but it is clear why Hector was needed by the people on the rez. My wish would be that this excellent series educates people and promotes activism for the Native Americans. We must not forget that THEY are not immigrants, WE are. For a great perspective on that, read Neither Wolf Nor Dog.

We’ve just start Season 1 again for the reasons you shared: Entertainment, mystery, family values, Native Americans, escapism. I hope the friendship between Longmire and Henry Standing Bear improves in Season 6. Can’t make it to Buffalo, WY this year for Longmire Days, but will make it to Green Bay, WI. for Writers’ Police Academy.
About that old adage about alot of truth in fiction, wonder how much Longmire is like Craig Johnson..

Love the books, and I love the show. Wish there were more Walts in the country. Longmire represents the stoic American standing up for truth. Many a men need to learn from Longmire. Do right by all people, try and do a good job, respect the land and have one good life-long friend.

I think Longmire and Blue Bloods are two of the best shows. I wait a little impatiently for the next season each year. Love some Netflix binging.

About the only thing I can disagree with here is your reference to Longmire being a nostalgic show. Rather, I look at it as steadfast and can relate to the themes and the characters. You’re absolutely right about it taking us out of this crazy political circus that surrounds us and places us in intriguing circumstances with characters who remind us of friends or family members.
Maybe that’s why the show is so popular. In addition to being entertaining, it’s also comforting.

Have read the books but Matt Carter isn’t a literary critic, he writes about TV. There’s no need to yell and curse at him and all of us, lol.

Craig Johnson’s new book, Western Star, is due out 9/5/17. Perhaps this maybe a clue to S6 release date since in previous years CJ’s books were released in concert with the upcoming season streaming from Netflix!

Longmire had my attention after the second show of season one. Yes the fall in a long time to wait. I wish it would come on every day. Wonder why this will be the last season? Hopefully someone else picks up for season seven (Amazon) plus if Netflix drops. Longmire is one of the top rated shows on Netflix I have read. Walt reminds me of my Dad no nonsense do what is right and never forget where you came from respect the people be honest with who you are.
