‘America’s Got Talent’: Is Ryan Seacrest the likely Nick Cannon replacement?

As of today, it doesn’t appear as though anything is going to be changing when it comes to the status of one Nick Cannon as the host of “America’s Got Talent.” He announced yesterday that he is leaving the show following some controversy over a joke that he made during a Showtime special. To date, there’s been no real confirmation of anything on the NBC front, but we figure that they better go into overdrive as the audition shows are going to be filming starting in early March.

So is Ryan Seacrest the natural replacement if Cannon is indeed gone? On paper, the clear answer seems to be yes — Seacrest already has a rich relationship with NBC, and he also of course worked with Simon Cowell for many years on “America’s Got Talent.” On paper, he seems like the logical person to add to the mix.

However, when Seacrest was caught by TMZ recently, he said that he hadn’t heard anything about him hosting the show — he complimented the series on its success, but he was cagey on whether or not he would be interested in hosting. Our answer? There may at least be some interest, since it wasn’t an outright no; but, there are still so many other things to consider, including his schedule already and then also the rumors that “American Idol” could be coming back next season. If that happens, it could be somewhat challenging to do both shows.

The only thing that we would ask anyone who is tasked with being the next host of this show is that the series finds someone who understands the show and its tone — you want someone who can sympathize with the contestants, while still remembering that this show is meant to be fun, entertaining, and not at all intimidating. Hosting is an underrated job, so finding someone with experience in the venue is very important.
