If ‘American Idol’ returns, should Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban, and Harry Connick Jr.?
Last week, we had a chance to see one of the most surprising rumors of the year so far, as there were the emergence of reports that “American Idol” could be revived over at NBC less than a year from the show ending at Fox. In some ways, we absolutely do understand the chatter, mostly because of the fact that the show’s ratings were decent by current TV standards at the time in which it was canceled. Also, it’s become a tradition for so many people out there, and there are longtime fans who do miss it around this time of year.
For the sake of this article, let’s engage in a little bit of the old what-if game. We’re assuming that if the show comes back, there would be talks with Ryan Seacrest about returning as host — he’s iconic to the brand, he’s expressed an interest in coming back if the show ever does return, and he also has a good working relationship with NBC.
What about the judges? This is where things get even more interesting. For Jennifer Lopez, she does have a great relationship with the network — she does “Shades of Blue” already, and she also has an upcoming reality show in “World of Dance” premiering later this year. With her, the big question that we have is whether or not she’d simply have time to balance all of these properties with performing at the same time. Keith Urban doesn’t have as many TV commitments, but at the same time he’s always either touring or recording. It probably all comes down to giving him enough advance notice to plan around it.
Then, there’s Harry Connick Jr., who now has a huge commitment in the form of a daytime show. Given that Sharon Osbourne did both “The Talk” and “The X Factor” in the United Kingdom, we know that it’s feasible in theory. Personally, we’d love to see it happen since Harry was a great breath of fresh air when he first joined the panel. In general, J.Lo, Keith, and Harry were the show’s best panel since we had the original three of Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul, and Simon Cowell — therefore, we’d love to see them all come back in the event that the show is revived.
