SAG Awards 2017: ‘The Crown,’ Rami Malek, Millie Bobby Brown, ‘black-ish’ lead our predictions

Tonight on TNT / TBS, the annual Screen Actors Guild Awards are going to air, and as a result of that, we imagine that there will once again be plenty of conversation surrounding various surprises, snubs, and more over the course of the night. It’s certainly something that we’re going to be offering up some more analysis of as we get a little bit later in the day.

For now, though, we’re here to discuss some predictions! (we’re bolding that so that people don’t think this article is abound the winners.) The following is our take on who will win some of the big TV-related categories for the night. One of the things to remember about SAG in particular is that they tend to be fairly predictable, and will only honor a surprise winner if it is someone who caters extremely well to both the cultural zeitgeist and also the actor community.

Drama Ensemble – “The Crown.” Given the many wins of “Downton Abbey” in various categories at this show, we’ve come to learn that the Guild loves to honor strong, actor-based period dramas that rely heavily on performances more than special effects.

Drama Actor – Rami Malek, “Mr. Robot.” While there are many strong candidates this year, we find it hard to foresee the show going in a direction where they do not honor one of the most transcendent and innovative character performances in some time.

Drama Actress – Millie Bobby Brown, “Stranger Things.” This is probably the riskiest pick we’re going to make, just because it’s a tad more genre than what the SAG Awards usually like. However, just look at how many people out there continue to talk about this show.

Comedy Ensemble – “black-ish.” It’s brilliantly funny, and it’s doing more to be relevant to the era than any other comedy series out there.

Comedy Actor – Anthony Anderson, “black-ish.” Odds are, you’re noticing the trend here. This show is a great reminder that you don’t need to star in something on premium cable in order to be bold and hilarious at the same time.

Comedy Actress – Julia Louis-Dreyfus, “Veep.” Remember what we said about the SAG Awards being easy to predict at times? No matter the awards show, it’s hard to go against Louis-Dreyfus.

TV Movie / Miniseries Actor – Sterling K. Brown, “The People v. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story.” The only thing that may hold Sterling back is that he’s not the only excellent actor from this show nominated in this category.

TV Movie / Miniseries Actress – Sarah Paulson, “The People v. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story.” We feel more confident with this category than we do with any other one that is included on this list.

Stunt Ensemble – “The Walking Dead.” In terms of both size and scale, no one else out there on television does it better.

Who do you think will win some of the TV-focused SAG Awards tonight? Share in the comments.
