‘The Flash’ season 3, episode 9 preview: Facing Savitar, and trying to understand him

Savitar -

There are a number of different fantastic things that “The Flash” does routinely to excite us, and at this point in season 3, they’ve somehow got us both on board and stoked to see more of some bizarre CG creation that apparently refers to itself as Savitar, God of Speed. There are only a few things that we know about this character so far, including that he and Alchemy are working together in some capacity, that only Speedsters can see him, and that apparently, he is impervious to being attacked by ice. Killer Frost at least was able to slow him down temporarily.

Entering the midseason finale, that could change somewhat, and really pivot the remainder of the show to go along with it. As executive producer Andrew Kreisberg notes to Entertainment Weekly, the focus on the show moving forward is not going to be Flashpoint nearly as much as it was during the first part of season 3:

“So much of the first half of the season has been about Flashpoint and the ramifications of that … Events will occur in episode 9 that will change the direction of the show moving forward. They will have a greater idea of what threat Savitar faces, and what they’re truly up against for this season, and how it is going to take all of them to fight it.”

Hopefully, this episode will do an amazing job of offering up some clarity here given that by and large, all we’ve got going into this episode are some massive question marks. How do you stop a god? That doesn’t appear to be an easy task. Also, what sort of hold does Savitar have on Julian to make him become Alchemy and put on that mask? Judging from the end of 3×07, it doesn’t appear to be something that he is doing willingly, but when he puts it on, it’s possible that it makes another part of him take over. The Alchemy we saw during the confrontation in his lair did not act much like the Julian we’ve come to know.

There’s clearly a lot to be excited about here, mostly because “The Flash” always does seem to get their villains right — even if Zoom was particular depressing for much of the latter part of his run.
