‘Madam Secretary’ season 3, episode 7 preview: Eric Stoltz returns as Elizabeth’s brother
We’re not sure why it is, but for one reason or another, there’s a specific trend with executive producers on “Madam Secretary” also being involved in other facets of the show. Morgan Freeman, for example, directed the past two premieres and also guest-starred in the same episodes. Now, we’re getting a chance to see yet another appearance from Eric Stoltz as Elizabeth’s brother Will. He directed an epiosde earlier this season, and he will be returning to the other side of the camera for next week’s “Tectonic Shift.”
So what’s happening with him over the course of this episode? Well, let’s just say that the character is forced to make a key decision between trying to figure out how to stabilize his family and his future, or going off and doing more of the risky-but-important work that he does overseason.
Synopsis – “After Venezuela’s president and his immediate successors are killed in a devastating earthquake, Elizabeth works to stop a power grab by the late president’s son, as well as secure the release of the international aid team he arrested. Also, Elizabeth’s brother, Will (Eric Stoltz), is torn between saving his marriage by settling down and taking a job at Walter Reed Medical Center or going to Venezuela to assist in the relief effort.”
The reason that we focus more on the story of Will here is because “Madam Secretary” has a certain quality to it that is rather similar to what we’ve seen out of many crime shows that are out there on the CBS schedule. It’s harder to get engaged on the case-of-the-week story thanks mostly to the fact that there are so many of them that you’ve come to see over the years. In this case, it’s an international incident every week and it’s hard to differentiate all of them.
Therefore, the Will storyline has our eye at this particular moment, but we’ll see if that changes when this episode comes on the air.
