‘Longmire’ renewed by Netflix; season 6 to be final season
The news on “Longmire” is officially in, and we’re sure the reaction will be somewhat bittersweet.
This morning, Netflix confirmed that they have picked up the crime drama, starring Robert Taylor, Katee Sackhoff, and Lou Diamond Phillips, for an upcoming sixth season. The kicker is that it’ll also be the show’s last. While we’re sure there is some sadness mixed in here, remember here that this is a show originally canceled by A&E a few years ago without a proper ending. We weren’t sure we were even going to get anything beyond a season 3, so to get three more years of it has been wonderful to say the least. Also, the writers now have an opportunity to craft a fitting end, something they weren’t going to have on the original network.
In a statement, the show’s executive producers Greer Shephard, Hunt Baldwin and John Coveny said the following about the news:
“[Thanks to Netflix] for the opportunity to compose a closing chapter for these beloved characters that inspires lasting memories. Most importantly, we’re committed to delivering a dynamic and satisfying conclusion to our fans that rewards their longtime loyalty.”
We have no idea what the ratings for “Longmire” on Netflix were, given that the streaming provider doesn’t release such figures. Our assumption is that it’s fared decently, and if nothing else, has succeeded in providing Netflix a demographic that they don’t often get with some of their younger-skewing shows. In not outright canceling the series, they’ve done the “Longmire” fandom right and that’s something we love Netflix for. We’re nothing but grateful to them for bringing this show closer to its true potential; we especially think that season 4 was a high point for the series, with the first few episodes in particular being the finest work from the show we’ve seen.

My sentiments too. Netflix behaved admirably and I thank them for that. Longmire has provided many hours of viewing pleasure for me.

I have so enjoyed #Longmire! I wish to thank Netflix for the seasons they gave us. I will continue with Netflix and watch some of their other shows, and also rewatch #Longmire.

We are very saddened that we are losing one of the best shows ever to be produced. We fell in love with the characters and they became so real to us. We are grateful that we will get one more season to finish up all the story lines. But it is still bittersweet. When Netflix took over Longmire we thought we were going to get so many more seasons of our beloved characters. They have become almost family to us. I speak for others that feel the same way I do. So people have stated that they will not continue with Netflix, I have thought about it, but realized no matter what we will still have seasons 1 thru 6 to watch as often as we want. We have made a connection with these characters and the actors that play them. To me its like losing a member of your family with only pictures left to remember them. We hoped that with all the Stampedes that the Longmire Posse did we would have so much more time with our beloved characters. I would like to thank not only Netflix for giving us three more seasons but the producers of the show and the writers who brought to life the characters from Craig Johnson’s books. You did a job well done, thank you. We will never forget, LONGLIVELONGMIRE!!!!

It’s certainly bittersweet in that sense — I’d probably be sadder if Netflix aired season 6 and then promptly canceled it. Here, I’m at least happy the writers get to make a fitting end, and six seasons is so much more than many shows get these days.
