Will ‘Wayward Pines’ score season 3 renewal based on latest ratings?

Wayward Pines -The summer season is not usually the best when it comes to discussing interesting ratings headlines, but there are at least a few notable things worthy of discussion in terms of “Wayward Pines” this season. The Fox series has already in some ways surpassed expectations when it comes to even getting a second season (originally, it was billed only as a limited series), so is it possible that it could make it to a third, as well? We’re certainly not ruling it out.

When it comes to the live ratings that we’ve seen for it as of late, they do generate some cause for concern. Last night’s new episode drew just a 0.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic, and then also a little bit over 2 million viewers. These are some of the show’s smallest numbers to date, and they pose an interesting question: Had Fox promoted this show last year as something finite and lasting two years instead of one, would they be better? We feel like beyond a weak start to the season (it has improved), one of the things that has hurt it this season is there is no longer that sentiment of it being contained. People are afraid of commit to something that lasts for an undetermined amount of time.

If the show does get a third season, we’d almost suggest that they promote it as the final season from the get-go given that with the ratings being what they are at present, it’s liable to not survive longer than that, anyways. The decision here will ultimately come down to what Fox is willing to spend on quality summer programming, and may also if they have some other ideas in place that they have a little more confidence in than this one.
