‘Saturday Night Live’ re-watch: Reliving Peter Dinklage, Gwen Stefani’s ‘Space Pants’

SNL -Tonight, “Saturday Night Live” is repeating their episode from earlier this season featuring Peter Dinklage and musical guest Gwen Stefani, and while we’re not going to say specifically that this was the strongest episode of the year, it did produce a few memorable moments.

Take, for example, “Space Pants.” This is a little bit of an interesting one for the show, mostly because we actually think that it is probably not as great a sketch as it is remembered, mostly because the end of it is so delightfully catchy. It actually starts rather weak with a mafia meeting that doesn’t quite make sense, only for Dinklage’s character to come out singing a really ridiculous song. Getting Stefani out later to sing about “Space Shorts” was a nice touch to go along with it.

Ultimately, the one part of this sketch that is probably underrated is that Stefani is playing herself, which means that she is hanging out with this Space Pants guy like it is no big deal, and something that she does on a regular basis.

As for some other sketches that are worthy of checking out if you haven’t seen already, the “Naked and Afraid” parody with Leslie Jones and Peter is pretty wonderful; however, it does lose a lot of its replay value when you know where it is going, and specifically where many of the beats are going to be comedically. Sure, Leslie and Peter are great together, so hopefully they’ll do some other sketches if he ever hosts the show again.
