‘The Bachelorette’ review: Chad Johnson overtakes Wells Adams (and almost JoJo Fletcher) in screen time

Wells -On Monday night’s new episode of “The Bachelorette,” there was craziness. Specifically, there was Chad Johnson getting really angry over random stuff. We do think that the guy gives wonderful confessional, so if there is one reason why the producers are keeping him around, this is probably it.

The first group date – Specifically here, what we’ve got for you is yet another example of how standing out, even in the wrong way, is good. Wells Adams got the first group-date rose of the season, largely because he got some time with her after being rather terrible at pretending to be a firefighter. Meanwhile, Grant Kemp (an actual firefighter) of course won the firefighter tasks, and he got extra time with her … and no rose at all.

Other than this, it was a pretty predictable date.

The first one-on-one date – It’s Derek Path! The two went on a choose-your-own-adventure journey through San Francisco. Yet, at the same time we were much more entertained watching Chad bro down and be obnoxious back at the house. America is going to hate him, and in many ways that is probably part of the point.

Yes, Derek got the rose, and we find it somewhat funny how ABC hyped up that he was going to have a “hard time opening up” when he really didn’t have much of any trouble at all when he and JoJo sat down for dinner.

“SportsNation” – Chad is a complicated figure. If he wasn’t such a heel, maybe we’d actually root for him since some of these other guys did come across as really over-the-top and not entirely genuine. They were saying what the show wants rather than how they’re potentially feeling, which can be dangerous down the road. The problem with Chad is that he doesn’t know the line.

While we do think Chad won her over a little bit better after the “SportsNation” segment, but it wasn’t enough for him to get the group date over James Taylor, who was the pick of both Max and Marcellus after the time she spent with them.

Cocktail party – CHAD CHAD CHAD. Seriously. This is really the main focal point of the entire 30 minutes of this episode, since he basically trolled everyone to get time with JoJo. In some ways, it’s hilarious to watch the other guys obsess over him and his d-bag ways; yet, at the same time it had to be hell for many of them.

Rose Ceremony – We knew Chad was getting the rose. He had an edit that made that PERFECTLY clear, and the rest of the guys hated it. We don’t think he’ll be around long, but he’s bringing the drama for now.

As for eliminations, tonight we ended up saying goodbye to James S. … and some other people we don’t even remember. No surprise there. Episode Grade: C+ (for Chad plus his muscles).
