‘Vikings” season 4, episode 6 review: Ragnar, Lagertha, Floki and Bjorn begin raid on Paris

Are you ready to see Ragnar come back to life on “Vikings” season 4? On the last episode he admitted that he is riddled with guilt over some of the mistakes he’s made in his rule, and we saw just how depressed he really is, but we are hoping that Yidu is going to breathe some life back into him (and maybe stop turning him into a drug addict). He’s lost his passion ever since Athelstan died, but we feel it’s time for him to get back on the horse and raid Paris!

Ragnar: Two of his boys are getting their arm rings, but not Ivar or Siguard (They’re not old enough yet) and they swear their loyalty to Ragnar as their king and father. After the ceremony he tells Aslaug that the boys are coming with him to Paris against her wishes, and the boys are excited to take their next step into manhood. Yidu wants to come to Pairs with Ragnar and she uses the drugs she’s been giving him as a bribe saying that she will only give them to him if he takes her. She gets her way and Yidu comes to Paris – drug addiction is a hell of a thing. We also saw just how much Aslaug is babying Ivar as he is still being breastfed at 5. With Ragnar gone, the wanderer has returned for Aslaug saying that he will free her of her suffering if she wants it and she brings him to Ivar. What is he going to do to free her of her suffering and will she even be there for Ragnar when he returns?

The raid: When the raiding group first arrives, they slaughter the first group of soldiers they find, except one who escapes and lights signal fires to warn everyone in Paris of their arrival. We see how divided the group of vikings are as Ragnar’s men raid as they always have, killing who they have to where as Harald’s men are cruel and take enjoyment in torturing their prisoners. Bjorn is disappointed that there is no sign of Rollo’s camp, but Ragnar is not surprised. When Ragnar’s boat reaches the shores of Paris, Rollo is waiting for him and Ragnar knows he’s been betrayed.

There was a lot going on in this episode, but at the same time nothing really happened. It felt a lot like a set up for the big battle coming up between the vikings and Paris. It was interesting to see Rollo pledge his allegiance to the king that he will not betray him when he sees Ragnar, but it could be quite different when we see the two brothers face to face again. We haven’t seen Ragnar and Rollo speak yet, but Rollo looks like he’s standing strongly with Paris. Episode grade: B-
