‘The Walking Dead’ season 6 ratings: How are they holding up?
Has “The Walking Dead” passed its tipping point? It’s a question that we have raised and presented with evidence in the past, but given that it’s been a few weeks since we have posted an article about the show’s ratings, it really felt like now was the perfect time to go headfirst into this particular discussion once more.
In looking at the numbers that have just come in from Sunday’s episode, which turned out to be a rather sad one for Denise, we are of two minds. Of course, there is no denying that a 6.0 in the 18-49 demographic is wonderful. It’s a rating that no show other than “Empire” has come close to as of late, and it is more than double the rating of anything on primetime.
Unfortunately, the year-to-year comparison does not look anywhere near as flattering. The 14th episode of season 5 drew a whopping 7.0 rating, which shows that there has been a pretty large chunk of the audience that has either drifted, or is simply opting to record the show now rather than watch live. Maybe it is a combination of the two in some way. This is not a recent tradition, either, given that the past few episodes have all been behind season 5 by a reasonably similar margin.
In the end, it’s still right to call “The Walking Dead” an enormous hit, and one of TV’s top shows no matter how you slice it. However, at the same time it may be wrong to claim that it has the same strength in live+same day viewing that it once did.
