‘The Walking Dead’ season 6 spoilers: On handling the issue of Negan cursing

twdThe producers behind “The Walking Dead” certainly know that they have a little bit of gold with the character of Negan. How could they not know this? He’s one of the most-popular characters in the history of the series for one, and there is a certain gravitas and power viewers are looking forward to seeing.

With this being said, there is a certain part of this said gravitas that may be challenging for the AMC series to completely pull off: The cursing. This is a show airing at 9:00 p.m. on a Sunday night, and while they may be extraordinarily violent, they are not a show to drop the f-bomb in a way you typically hear only over on premium cable / “The People v. OJ Simpson.”

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Scott M. Gimple made it clear that this is still a subject that he and the other people on the team are trying to figure out in their own way:

“I’m still finishing up season 6, so there are still aspects of these questions that I’m figuring out. But I will say that my goal is for, at the very least, in some way — might not be all the time, and it might not even be directly through your TV box — that people will be able to get full-octane Negan. I’m still playing around with it, but I will say I do have the material two ways right now. I’ll see what I can do with it. One way or another I want people to see full-octane Negan. Will I be able to shoot every scene like that? Probably not, but to tell you the truth, I think we will get as close to the version of full-octane Negan as we can through some version of the show or another.”

Do we think that the success of “Deadpool” as a film shows just how much of an appetite there is for extreme comic-book entertainment? Sure, but rating movies and TV shows are a little different. There’s probably a compromise that comes with showing Negan as a true villain, complete with cursing, without having him say a swear word in every sentence.
