‘Fear the Walking Dead’ season 2 spoilers: More on the mystery of Strand

fear -

We did not start to get to know Strand until near the end of “Fear the Walking Dead” season 1, but as we started to see at the end of Sunday night’s season finale, this is someone very different than anyone else we’ve met. He’s powerful, resourceful, and is very capable of figuring out ways to use what he has to ensure survival. This is why we saw him take Travis, Madison, and the rest of their remaining group to his compound at the end of the season, which just so happened to be a swanky house right on the coast.

How is this man going to continue to be a part of this show? While executive producer Gale Anne Hurd would not comment to Deadline about whether or not the show’s setting would remain Los Angeles, she did make it clear that Strand is someone who will remain an integral part of the story:

“…[We’ve] never had a character like Strand (Coleman Domingo) in The Walking Dead. You know, he’s not someone that you would encounter in rural Southeast. He’s very much a character who has survived and succeeds by his wits and his ability to negotiate in a complex urban society. [Anyone who has] watched The Walking Dead [knows] that expensive cufflinks or a gold watch is not going to have much currency in the new world. But Strand is able to assess someone and find out how he can use them to get what he wants and what it is that they want. And that’s another very useful skill going into the zombie apocalypse and Fear.”

Do we think that Strand has some sort of dark intentions for his ragtag crew of survivors? Not necessarily, but we also have a hard time thinking that he is acting entirely out of altruistic means. Maybe he sees someone like Nick as a bargaining chip, or someone who will already owe him almost everything after he saved him earlier this season.

What we do know is that there is no character on the AMC series we want to see more of than him moving into season 2.
