‘Doctor Who’ season 9: Jenna Coleman confirms departure
As it turns out, there is no need for long-standing rumors this time around: Jenna Coleman is indeed departing “Doctor Who” at some point during the upcoming ninth season / Christmas Special.
Coleman herself was the one to confirm the news today to BBC Radio, stating that her exit was “emotional” and that she has already filmed her last scenes for the show:
“We’re not going to give any details but it will happen at some point this season … [executive producer] worked out a really good story arc, so hopefully people will love it.”
There are a variety of different reasons at this point why losing Coleman on the show makes sense, even if some out there may be particularly sad about it. For one, if she makes it through the whole season she will have been a part of the show longer (at least in terms of episode count) than the majority of the other Companions to ever appear on the show. Given that she nearly left last season, it’s not much of a shock to think that this would be the time for her to depart.
Also, there really was another sign that many out there should have noticed: Alex Kingston is going to be returning as River Song for the Christmas Special. While it made sense that you could have both her and Coleman in the episode, this could be a way for the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) to have someone to spend some time with in the event that Clara Oswald is already gone by then.
The ninth season of “Doctor Who” premieres tomorrow on BBC One; therefore, there is no reason to wonder about this for the entirety of the season.
