‘Elementary’ season 4 spoilers: Reasons to fear Sherlock’s father

ElementaryAs you may have heard many times already this summer, one of the most notable additions to the upcoming fourth season of “Elementary” is going to be the presence of Sherlock’s father Morland. After so many years of hearing about this man from afar, he is finally going to factor more into the equation! As for who is playing him, it is none other than the magnificent man known as John Noble (“Fringe,” “Sleepy Hollow”).

If you missed it, you can take a look at Noble in a first-look over here. In this piece, we are talking more about what Morland is bringing to the table. He’s a crafty man, and while he may seem kind on the surface to Joan Watson, she may realize not too long after that there is something bubbling underneath the surface that is far from pretty. Just take a look at executive producer Rob Doherty’s comments to Entertainment Weekly:

“When Joan does meet dad, there will be some friction … When Morland arrives and makes a genuine and surprising attempt to help Sherlock, Sherlock has to rethink his relationship with his dad. As the season progresses, we’re going to see that Joan is worried that dad is a little more like the guy Sherlock has described, versus the guy he seems to be now. She’ll be keeping a careful eye on him.”

The moral ambiguity here is one of the great reasons why Noble has been cast on the show. Nobody plays this sort of ambiguity better than him! From one vantage point, you can imagine him as a kind, generous soul, but there could be something underneath Mr. Holmes’ armor that leads you to believe otherwise. This is what was so frightening about Henry Parrish on “Sleepy Hollow,” at least before that show started to sink somewhat under its own mythology.
