NBC puts distance between themselves, Donald Trump; Miss USA Pageant still to air (for now)

NBC -The breaking news today has been for the most part about TV networks and their commitment to air the 2015 Miss USA Pageant after some disparaging comments made by Donald Trump. The Presidential candidate in a series of TV interviews / speeches last week generalized many Mexican immigrants in negative fashion, and as a result of that he has already lost support from Univision, who has decided not to broadcast the even on July 12. The event has also lost its co-hosts for the Spanish-language broadcast.

While NBC has not made a move yet as to not air the pageant, the network is reportedly at the moment evaluating all options, with one of them potentially being not airing the pageant. One of their biggest issues here could be a signed contract, which could lead to lawsuits and a variety of other issues. Then again, they may also receive goodwill from select groups who have spoken out against Trump over the past week or so.

For now, here is what NBC had to say on the subject in a statement:

“Donald Trump’s opinions do not represent those of NBC, and we do not agree with his positions on a number of issues, including his recent comments on immigration.”

The issue that NBC is going to run into here is that news stories like this have a tendency to spiral, and it is not like there is that much time between now and the pageant actually airing. We understand that there are many young women who do not deserve to be punished because of the actions of someone else, and maybe that is what makes this so complicated.
