‘Once Upon a Time’ season 4 finale spoilers: The Author crafts Rumpelstiltskin’s new journey

What exactly is the Author on “Once Upon a Time” getting out of working with Rumpelstiltskin? It is certainly a fantastic question at the moment, but also not one that we have much in the way of an answer to for the time being.

Instead, what we really have for you when it comes to insight is courtesy of the latest sneak peek below for “Operation Mongoose,” otherwise known as the fourth-season finale that is airing in two parts on Sunday night. This features at least an opportunity to understand why the Author feels disenfranchised with this world; while he may be able to craft happy endings for other people, he still feels very lost. Therefore, there is something that he finds common ground with when it comes to Rumple.

What is the most interesting part of this preview for us is seeing what happens when the Author brings up the subject of Baelfire, otherwise known as a character who has been nary referenced on the show as of late. How does Rumple want his son factoring into his future story? He does not want to completely erase the memory of what happened to his son, but he wants to imagine that he was better to his son in any sort of future timeline. We’re not sure that this necessarily is going to be the right way to go given that he is still wiping himself away of pain, but it is at least nice to have a reminder that the man did love and care for his son.

Now, we just have to wonder if these new changes and narratives will ultimately be permanent.
