ABC’s ‘Scandal’ season 4, episode 20 video: Mellie’s Senate struggle

The Lawn Chair -Mellie Grant in some ways seems like a complex character on “Scandal,” and yet at the same time many of her wants and desires can be ultimately summed up in a single word: Power. She wants it, and at times she will do almost anything in order to ensure that she gets it. Sometimes, that means listening to every person in the room, and using that information to try and figure out what her next move could be.

For Mellie, one of these moves seems to be actually distancing herself somewhat from the President. How in the world is that going to be possible? She is advised to do in the sneak peek below, and it’s almost reminiscent of what we had with Alicia and Peter Florrick recently on “The Good Wife.” The difference there was that Peter was in a more political position, whereas Alicia was merging that with the law. The Senate and the Presidency are in some ways even more closely aligned.

A good way to sum up this issue, and the conflicts of having a husband-and-wife team in politics are as follows: If two spouses cannot agree on issues, how is there hope for Congress to ever accomplish anything? We can already see those arguments being thrown out into the press.

Another name mentioned in the sneak peek is Sally Langston’s, and any time she is thrown into the discussion, bad news clearly follows. There are few things as scary to politicians these days as powerful cable-news hosts with strong political views. No one wants that.
