‘Saturday Night Live’ music: George Ezra performs ‘Budapest,’ ‘Blame It on Me’

More news -We don’t listen to the radio very much (not since the radio broke in our car), and we also do not go on iTunes and purchase much in the way of music. Therefore, we are one of those rare people who actually relies on shows like “Saturday Night Live” to tell us what is new and exciting in the music industry. That’s why we really enjoy it when they book musical guests like George Ezra. We had never heard of him before he was announced, but now we’re thrilled to say that he gave a really strong performance, and we loved the melody and the lyrical content of “Budapest”.

One other thing Ezra deserves some credit for here is coming in with some not-so-easy expectations. By the time he performed during this weekend’s show (read our review here), things were already high-octane and hilarious. This was one of our favorite shows of the season, and brought us more consistent laughs than even the 40th anniversary. It’s with that in mind that we almost went into this performance expecting to just count down the minutes until the comedy resumed and were pleasantly surprised when we didn’t want Ezra’s set to end.

For his second song, Ezra came out and performed another song in “Blame It on Me”. What impresses us perhaps the most is the lower register, given that this is not something we tend to hear these days from performers. Most of them now try to sound the same, and not do anything beyond simple chord progressions and predictable content…. in other words, many musicians out there right now like to play it safe, something that Ezra clearly doesn’t do. Another great job.

So congratulations to you, Mr. Ezra, you gave a wonderful performance and turned us into fans. For those of you who feel a deeper attachment because you discovered him first, you still get that notch in your belt, but know that he’s probably going to be way more popular from here on out.
