‘American Idol XIV’ review: Quentin Alexander, Clark Beckham, Joey Cook perform movie songs

American Idol -Are you ready to see a showcase for all things themed around the big screen? Well, you certainly had that on Thursday night’s new “American Idol” episode. Everyone tried to perform songs that were for the most part made famous in movies … with or two people deciding that they would just do songs that were randomly featured in a movie or two. It took a little while for this show to get going, but it was great when it did!

As with every other show review that we’ve done all season, refresh for some more performances as the night goes on!

Adanna Duru, “Love You I Do” – Very good. It wasn’t exactly the most inventive in the world, but we admit that we still enjoyed it for the most part. Adanna is getting better vocally almost every week! Now if only she can remember that Jennifer Hudson was on the show…

Daniel Seavey, “Lost Stars” – So that happened. It was a total mess. We don’t know why Americans are voting for him, and making him into a target of ridicule. He’s just not ready for the competition at this stage.

Rayvon Owen, “Stayin’ Alive” – Rayvon can really sing falsetto. The problem with this song is that there’s not really a whole lot that you can do with it once you get past doing the first couple of verses.

Nick Fradiani, “Danger Zone” – Whoever thought this tempo for the song was good should be locked up. Nick’s worst performance on the show, and we ranked him #1 going into tonight! It was just too lifeless an arrangement for him to do anything with it.

Joey Cook, “Mad World” – A very competent performance of the song. The problem is that we’ve heard it done better on this show, and we probably would have chosen a different arrangement to differentiate it a little bit.

Tyanna Jones, “Circle of Life” – Tyanna takes her best shot at this song, but this is like “Mad World” in a way. Someone previously on the show (Jennifer Hudson) was awesome with it, and that was hanging over Tyanna. Solid, but not spectacular.

Quentin Alexander, “You’re the One I Want” – Quentin IS one of the ones we want. While not every note was perfect, he has the “moody atmospheric guy from New Orleans” bit down.

Maddie Walker, “Let’s Hear It for the Boys” – Let’s hear it for … someone? This was pleasant enough, but there is a disconnect almost between what Maddie is singing, and what she is doing on the stage.

Clark Beckham, “Sunday Morning” – This was a little of a reach when it comes to the theme. Still, an excellent performance that was easily his best of the season (and he has been very good so far).

Jax, “To Grow Old With You” – Simplistic, and yet beautiful. Jax is back! One of our favorites of the night, but the show made us wait until really late in the night for it.

Qaasim Middleton, “Come Together” – A few too many faces and the vocals were at times spotty. Still, it was fun! We’re glad that he was saved, but also worried that an even stronger artist could go home soon.
