‘American Horror Story: Hotel,’ Lady Gaga appearance was teased during ‘Freak Show’

American Horror Story -American Horror Story” executive producer Ryan Murphy has always said that he loves to sprinkle in clues to future seasons into the present narrative. Therefore, we cannot say we are too shocked to learn that there was a pretty major clue that Lady Gaga was coming during this past season entitled “Freak Show.”

According to Entertainment Weekly, the reference was actually based on a clue that many found during the show: A top hat. At the time this episode aired this past fall, many thought that this was a reference to Project Top Hat, and we were going to see a season themed around the nuclear arms race. However, it turns out it was a reference to the 1935 film Top Hat, which is set at a hotel. This also happens to be what the song “Cheek to Cheek” was originally written for. You’ve probably connected all the dots by now: “Cheek to Cheek” also happened to be the title of the Tony Bennett / Lady Gaga duets album that was released recently.

Gaga’s role on the upcoming season is still not clear, but the process of getting her on the show apparently has been in the works since this past fall. Once the right role was crafted for her, she was on board … and FX was not even aware of her interest for most of the time.

Now, the network has to be doing backflips that they have someone of her caliber on the show. While she’s not known as an actress first and foremost, her name alone will bring viewers to a show that is already a big hit.
