‘NCIS’ season 12 spoilers: Expect (at least) a double-dose of Robert Wagner
Do you love the elder DiNozzo on “NCIS“? Then we feel like today, we come bearing some great news: You are going to see a whole lot more of him later on this season.
Speaking to TVLine, executive producer Gary Glasberg confirms that Robert Wagner’s return to the show is more than a one-time thing. Specifically, he will be back at least “a couple of times” this season still.
Given some recent developments on the show, we feel like this is probably more important ever. Fathers have become a central part of “NCIS” lore over the years, but we have unfortunately lost many of them. The passing of Ralph Waite meant the end for the character of Gibbs’ father Jackson on the show last season, and the finale “Honor Thy Father” was in part a tribute to the actor and the character that he played. Meanwhile, McGee’s father was confirmed dead on the winter finale airing Tuesday night, as we learned that he had written a letter showing his appreciation for him, which he read aloud during a viewing for him.
Hopefully, DiNozzo Sr. is going to be around the show a rather long time; he’s not only a fun character, but Wagner and Michael Weatherly play off one another really well. It also gives Tony something further to do this season. We know that Marison Nichols is going to be back for at least one more episode as Zoe Keates, but other than that, there are still many mysteries coming up in terms of the story for this character.

While it makes me hopeful that we might finally get a Tony centric episode when they spoil that Senior is coming, all too often these end up being more about Senior than Tony, and all too often, they feature Tony fretting and squirming about Senior. I really wish just once they would write a Senior episode that was more about Tony than Senior and that wasn’t just a joke episode. I would like to see Senior having to worry about Tony instead of Tony always having to worry about Senior.

I’m torn about this. On one hand, I love Robert Wagner (have since his ‘It Takes A Thief’ days) and adore his rapport and chemistry with Michael Weatherly both on and off screen. On the other hand, I’m less impressed with the Senior episodes each time he shows up. The last few almost seemed forced – like “we have to do a Senior episode, what can we come up with”.

I hope that Ziva comes back to accompany Tony to Sr’s wedding.
