NBC’s ‘The Voice’ review: Anita Antoinette, Matt McAndrew, Craig Wayne Boyd, Chris Jamison rock top 12
Tonight, “The Voice” really did bring quite a bit of variety to the table. There were at times incredible performances, but also at times surprising mistakes, bad coach pandering, and Carson Daly interrogating Luke Wade for something that he clearly did not mean to do. All of this wrapped into a two-hour package that had a lot going on.
We’ve got our take on every remaining artist in the competition below, so check out that; if you missed it over the weekend, we also ranked the top twelve artists based on who are the most-likely contenders to make it all the way to the end.
Sugar Joans, “Take Me to the River” (Team Pharrell) – It is very hard to start off any episode of the show, especially with a song this soulful. Sugar did pretty well, but it stayed pretty well within its comfort zone. There were no real risks, so we feel like it could be forgotten by voters.
Jessie Pitts, “Don’t You Worry Child” (Team Blake) – This is basically exactly what we were hoping to see Jessie do with this song. She started slow, took her time with it, and then slowly let it build into something resembling the hit. One of our favorites.
Damien, “He Ain’t Heavy He’s My Brother” (Team Adam) – A big song, and Damien probably drew the biggest reaction from anyone at this point in the competition. What we worry about with him is that he’s just going to do one big church song after the next, and there will be no trajectory at all.
Ryan Sill, “Ordinary World” (Team Gwen) – Pleasant. That is the best way that we can describe it. There was nothing in here that we’d consider revolutionary at all, but maybe he will still have his fans.
DaNica Shirey, “Creep” (Team Pharrell) – She was awesome taking on a very hard song, but for some reason, we still wish that she didn’t do it. “Creep” is just an overdone track in the singing-show world, and there’s never anything that melodic about it.
Taylor John Williams, “If” (Team Gwen) – We really don’t like this song, and probably never will for a modern singing show. Taylor did what he could with it, which is probably enough to keep him around for another week.
Reagan James, “It Ain’t Over til It’s Over” (Team Blake) – A nice vocal. Reagan hit the notes and continues to prove that she has awesome stage presence. The one thing we wonder about is still if she’s going to get the votes that she needs.
Luke Wade, “Thinking Out Loud” (Team Pharrell) – Tough for Luke here, dealing with a major flub in his performance. It’s not good, but we’re not going to deride him completely for this since it’s a little different than forgetting lyrics. He did make it through the rest of the performance well, and he has a chance to move on.
Matt McAndrew, “Take Me to Church” (Team Adam) – We knew that he was going to have a huge moment with this song, and he did. One of the best performances of the night, and a chance for Matt to really establish himself as a favorite to win the competition.
Craig Wayne Boyd, “You Look So Good in Love” (Team Blake) – Craig’s going pure country for this one. It was soft, it was emotional, and it was for the most part something that will get him around a billion votes. We feel like overall, he and Matt may contend for the most votes on the night.
Chris Jamison, “Jealous” (Team Adam) – We were shocked by the choice. With that being said, one of the surprises of the night. The guy has a very great falsetto, and he may have actually been able to rival the applause that Matt received.
Anita Antoinette, “Redemption Song” (Team Gwen) – This is almost vocal chicken soup. It was warm, comforting, and poignant in every single way that we hoped for. This is one our favorites, and we’re thrilled to hear it almost any chance that we can. A worthy way to close the show.

Big fan of Taylor, but agree not great song choice tonight. Best of the night for me were Craig, Matt and Chris. Love The Voice!
