‘Downton Abbey’ season 5, episode 5 spoilers: Elizabeth McGovern’s Cora in a tough spot
Are things going to be going any better for Lady Cora on “Downton Abbey” season 5 Sunday? We wouldn’t count on it. Instead, Elizabeth McGovern’s character may continue to struggle when it comes to figuring out whether or not she is making the right choice for herself in spending time with a new man in her life. (Warning: Spoilers ahead for Americans!)
Of course, we are talking here about Simon Bricker. The art historian has already made his presence felt in a big way at the Abbey, and already made his interest in Cora clear.
From one vantage point, we could chide Elizabeth McGovern’s character for acting so oblivious to how he really feels about her. Even if this was a more innocent time, the writing is more than on the wall with all of the constant compliments that this guy is doling out time and time again.
However, simultaneously we don’t blame her. Robert doesn’t value her like he should, and of course this is going to lead to her potentially being focused elsewhere, and spending time with someone who compliments her and makes her feel like an intellectual equal.
While we know divorce is rare in this world, Shrimpy is in the process of making it happen. Robert does need to feel reasonably threatened by Simon, and not in a way where he just puffs out his chest. He needs to realize that he needs to step up his game if he wants to keep her around and happy in the long-term.
