‘The Mentalist’ season 7: What to expect next from Simon Baker, Robin Tunney
Tonight, “The Mentalist” is over for the season … but we’re very thrilled to say now that this is no longer the end of the road for the series! Despite so many initial fears about whether or not the show would be canceled, it is going to be back for a seventh and final season.
Of course, there are not a whole lot of spoilers on the show beyond what aired on CBS tonight, but we can at least tell you now that you’re going to be waiting for a very long time to figure out what is coming up next. The show is not going to be airing until at least midseason following the release of the full schedule, and that means that you better exercise patience. It may end up being a fill-in show for someone who ends up struggling in the ratings.
What we do think will be interesting to explore next season, in addition to a great case, is what happens if Jane and Lisbon are actually a couple. What does that look like? How would Jane learn to really care about someone else and show it all of the time? That is something that he has struggled with on occasions in the past. We’d also love to see a Patrick Jane wedding before the end of this, but that may be too much to ask for. All we can celebrate for now is that we’ll have at least 13 more episodes of Simon Baker and Robin Tunney to go along with the new cast that we have started to get to know now.

What do I want to see next season? First I want to see a full season of episodes. On them I want to see Patrick and Teresa as a full fledged couple. I want to see him smiling at her endlessly and showering her with love and attention. I want to see them in love and showing that they are in love. Ofcourse there will be some mild friction as they figure this all out and move forward but let’s keep their love strong with no doubts about it. Let them face outside conflicts together like they have so many times in the past. They are a team and a wonderful team. So let’s see them solve cases together. It was so great to see Patrick profess his love for Teresa and I am soooo glad she didn’t go to D C and came back and kissed Patrick. What a romantic, gentle, affectionate, and loving kiss. I keep watching those two scenes over and over. Love It!!!!!

I think in the last episode of series 7 they should jump a few years ahead – Jane and Lisbon married, with twin boys, working with Rigsby and Van Pelt in private detection but Jane has a ‘Parker Pyne Investigates’ type of role where he is a ‘detective of the heart’ finding ways to make people with problems happy using unorthodox solutions – they could even steal one of Agatha Christie’s Parker Pyne storylines, the originals aren’t that well known as they aren’t crime detection they are mysteries. It would leave a new door open for a new spin-off style series featuring all our favourite characters working in a team.

I think Jane and Lisbon getting married next season would be a bit much, though I could see the possiblity, depending on how much time passes in however many episodes there are and how their relationship goes, Jane proposing. Which would allow the Jisbon fans to imagine that the do end up getting married after the series ends and those who don’t like Jane and Lisbon together to imagine that something goes wrong and they don’t end up getting married or together any more. (Or at least that’s what I would do if I were Mr. Heller and co.)
While I have no doubt that Jane can probably always show Lisbon that he loves her, I believe there will probably be times during a case where Jane may end up doing something that will upset Lisbon that will in some shape or form effect their relationship. (Though I wouldn’t think it would cause serious problems since Lisbon has always shown that she will forgive Jane at some point, that is though assuming that Jane finally does something that Lisbon can’t forgive him for.)

I hope they get married, and maybe even a Jisbon baby? That would be my dream come true, as a true fan from season one, I am so hoping they get married and have a kid! Also, I want the show finale to feature Jisbon after they are married, with the original team and the new people- Risgby and Van Pelt and their kids, Cho, Abbott, Wiley, Fisher…that would be the best ending ever! and maybe get cho and fisher with people!

As a true fan from season one, I was so happy to see Jane start breaking through his emotional walls and learn to love again. Frankly until this season I would not have chosen Lisbon as his love interest, but by mid-season I was rooting for them to get together. In the final season I’d like to see Jane evolve even more. I felt he camouflaged his sorrow and guilt with a little too much humor sometimes. I’d like to see a serious side to him, committed and romantic, truly healthy and normal again. The episodes need to ramp up the suspense of each plot as well, meshing the personal with what they’re up against on a case. The last couple of episodes should be EPIC. Think Monk, if anyone is familiar with the way they hit a homerun with the series finale. And yes, let’s not rob the viewers of a few love scenes between Jane and Lisbon…..Please!

Less is more. I love the story and how their relationship has developed. Love is allowing yourself to be vulnerable and they really showed that. Simon Baker’s performance was amazing. Robin Tunney’s response was fabulous too. Despite their differences they are just such a great fit. What I loved about the final episode is that love is so much more than sex. It’s the raw feelings and the tenderness that make it so special. A kiss can convey all that and more. And Simon Baker was right, the fans want much more. A relationship that is based on unconditional love is what most people dream about and I hope they, the writers and actors will show us that in season 7, with some amazing cases, puzzles and teamwork and a worthy, clever villain thrown in. I love the new characters Abbott and Wylie. They are such a great addition to Cho, Jane and Lisbon. Cho deserves a loving mate too – I hope he gets lucky in season 7. Lots to look forward to.

Very well stated… One of the things which made the kiss scene so powerful was that Jane stated his love FIRST, not afterwards. That, plus essentially referring to commitment with the acknowledgment of not wanting to wake up knowing he wouldn’t see her, were potent examples of the unconditional, stay-together through thick and thin, love which touches each of us to the core.

What we want for The Mentalist is only half the question; the other half being “what does Patrick Jane need”, which parallels the question, what does The Mentalist need. It needs all the things that make a great show: continuity of story line, not just a jumble of side stories, it needs suspense, it needs conflict, danger, and most of all, it demands sacrifice to show the true quality in Jane’s character. What does this mean? It means: after another year of working together, Jane and Lisbon are setting the date to get married. The new team plus the former couple is going to be gearing up for the exciting event, though Cho is still baffled by the idea of their relationship. Jane, however, starts noticing things that stirs up a hidden fear which he has bottled up since before his late wife was killed. That fear starts to reveal itself, and it involves something that goes beyond what Jane and the team has ever faced before, and will push the boundaries of how far they are willing to go for one another when a global threat reaches out to make a personal vendetta against Jane, and ultimately the team. On the big day, those threats drop the subtleties and come full force, giving Jane no choice but to flee the ceremony just as it begins, to save the ones he cares about, at the price of possible damage beyond repair. Now he has chosen to play a game which will push his wits to the limit.

I would like to see Fisher gone. I am ok with Abbott. He has finally lightened up. I would love to see Grace and Wayne come back for at least one episode.
