MTV’s ‘Awkward’ season 4, episode 2 review: Jake – Tamara drama; Matty’s surprise

The latest -Tuesday night’s new episode of “Awkward” brought quite a bit to the table, at least when ti comes to humor, surprises, and really cramming in the stories within the span of a half-hour. Despite having new showrunners, this is a series swinging for the fences.

Some of what the show is missing right now is the supporting cast, mostly because Lissa is no Ming, and there is no replacement for her on the show. However, more of Sadie is a good thing, and her scenes between her and Lissa were both surprising and hilarious. Seeing her drive a food truck onto the field, no matter how ridiculous it was, was a nice and surprisingly human moment for a character known more for awful antics.

But, Sadie’s act was not even close to the biggest moment of the episode. Instead, that goes to Matty finding out the truth that he was adopted. As a matter of fact, that turned out to be an even bigger moment that Jake and Tamara breaking up, which was probably more expected given how much they fight and how they occasionally treat each other. Jake was a d-bag for doing a music video with a bunch of women in bikinis, while Tamara was often inconsiderate and self-centered. They have some growing up to do.

Does Matty’s new information change his relationship with anyone on the show? IT doesn’t have to, but it thankfully does give him something to do that does not directly involve Jenna or the other characters. That’s a good thing.

From a humor standpoint, having Jenna not able to speak for 24 hours turned out to be comedy gold, as so many of her friends used that as an avenue to stroke their own ego. The best part? All of this was probably true to how most people fell about person-to-person communication. Grade: B.
