‘House of Lies’ season 3, episode 11 review: Are Jeannie, Marty finally ‘together’?

House of Lies -“Together” was the title for the new “House of Lies” episode on Sunday night, and it certainly feels appropriate given the storyline that we had. The only thing that made this big event somewhat more of a “air coming out of the tires” moment was that it was not exactly set up as a surprise.

From the moment that the show flashed back to the previous drunken hookup between Marty and Jeannie on the “previously on” portion of the show, we knew that they were going to get getting together in the end here. There was no sense of mystery to it at all. They were going to get back together, and it came at a time when they appropriately had few other people to turn to. Lukas was dead, Marty realized that Dre was probably the one responsible for shooting him, and Jeannie realized through the shooting more about her life and how there isn’t much of a reason to mess around at all.

What we take a larger interest in now is if they actually stay together. For the best interest of the show, they need to. There’s a lot of material that can be mined from people in a professional and personal relationship, especially two who are as stubborn as these two are when it comes to refusing to accept any ideas other than their own.

Elsewhere, there was some good stuff in the form of Doug’s incredibly pathetic romantic life, Clyde continuing to be little more than an almost-functioning addict, and us seemingly not getting any more of Eliza Coupe. This part makes us sad.

So while this episode did thankfully move the story forward in a huge way and set up the finale, a few simple changes could have changed this from predictable to great. Unfortunately, the show presented what it did in preparing up for the hookup, and unlike Marty Kaan, we feel the need in these reviews to always be truthful. Grade: B-.
