MTV’s ‘Awkward’ season 4 spoilers: Jessica Lu, Nolan Funk leaving show

The latest -While we know that “Awkward” season 4 is returning next month on MTV with new episodes, we unfortunately haven’t really had that much time to share any good news on the series.

Why is that? At least one half of the news that we have for you today is probably going to make you sad. In a new interview with BuzzFeed (and their first since taking over the show from creator Lauren Iungerich, who is working on a new project), show bosses Chris Alberghini and Mike Chessler exclaimed that Jessica Lu, who plays quirky student and “Asian Mafia” head Ming, is not returning. Why? It’s simply a matter that “she wanted to move on.” In a sense, we understand given that her story was always the cheesiest and most underdeveloped of the main characters.

The less surprising news is that you will also not see anymore of Nolan Funk, who played the role of Jenna’s recent junkie love interest Collin. The only thing that we are somewhat disappointed here with is the complete transformation of this guy as a character from an introspective weirdo the first half of season 3 to the worst human being alive in the second half. It was almost like the show needed to make him awful to justify Jenna’s own actions. He will probably not be missed by many of the show’s fans.

Chessler was kind enough, potentially to soften the blow, to tease some of what the story ahead is going to be:

“What I love about senior year is that it’s such a specific time where, in a lot of ways, everything blows up,. You’re making decisions about what you’re going to do after high school, and it’s a time when the sky is the limit. You start going out more in senior year, so we blow out the world a lot more. We go out on the town. We go on college visits. Jenna might meet a cute college guy and enjoy a relationship with an older man.”

One final update worth celebrating: Get ready for some more great stuff for Sadie and Austin. Given that the former is our favorite character on the show by a mile, we’re thoroughly excited.
