2014 Golden Globes: ‘Game of Thrones,’ Maggie Siff, Lizzy Caplan among surprising snubs

All in all, we do feel like the 2014 Golden Globes did a great job in actually spreading the love around, and choosing nominees that weren’t already out there in other awards shows. But, there are still some actors out there that you could consider to be snubs, whether you’re thinking about longtime favorites or just shows that you like.

When we first saw the nominees this morning, the following ten items were what immediately stuck out to us. While we don’t necessarily think that all of them deserved a nomination, we at least either expected them to be there or thought that they were going to be there.

1. “Homeland” – The awards-show darling has lost a ton of critical momentum in season 3. No nomination for Claire Danes, let alone the show, really proves that.

2. “Game of Thrones” – Nothing significant for the HBO epic despite being its best season yet, including great performances by Michelle Fairley and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. Much of this may be due to nominations happening in the fall rather than the summer.

3. “Mad Men” – Nothing at all for “Mad Men,” either. It’s not a terrible surprise given how slow season 6 was at times, but it is still pretty noteworthy.

4. “Veep” – Julia Louis-Dreyfus got a nomination still, but the show didn’t get any love in the main category, and neither did Emmy champ Tony Hale.

5. “The Bible” – Despite getting huge ratings, the History Channel miniseries didn’t get any love at all from the Globes.

6. Mayim Bialik – Despite getting a SAG Award in a much more limiting category, Jim Parsons’ “Big Bang Theory” love interest failed to get anything here.

7. “Bates Motel” – Nothing for the series, or for its stars Vera Farmiga and Freddie Highmore. Complete disappointment.

8. “The Americans” – It’s pretty surprising just how quickly the momentum of this FX drama really stopped. Early this spring, it was talked about as a major awards contender. Now, everyone seems to have forgotten about it.

9. Maggie Siff – “Sons of Anarchy” getting snubbed from awards shows is commonplace, but Katey Sagal actually won a Golden Globe for playing Gemma.

10. Lizzy Caplan – We actually thought going into awards season that she would get more attention than Michael Sheen for “Masters of Sex,” mostly just based on what some critics were saying. But, she was snubbed in a very competitive Actress field this year.
