‘Friday Night Lights’ movie (at least one based on the TV show) not going to happen
“Friday Night Lights” is not going to be joining “Entourage” as beloved TV shows that eventually find their way to the big screen.
For the longest time, there was all sorts of talk about whether or not the NBC series, which was ironically based in part on a movie and also the original book, could end up hitting the big screen at some point in the future. Even some people affiliated with the show, including Connie Britton, were hoping to see some sort of adaptation happen someday after the show came to a touching conclusion. Thanks to this alone, we understand why there was such a desire to see more of it. But, at the same time, there was never really a need to continue a story that already had reached a conclusion; not only that, but not everyone on board the show (including star Kyle Chandler) was on board with the idea.
Thanks to all of this, you really should not let the comments from executive producer Peter Burg to Collider be too much of a surprise when it comes to how this is a project that will never see the light of day:
“There’s not gonna be a movie. We talked about it, some people thought it was a good idea, some didn’t; I’ve come to believe it’s probably not a good idea and I seriously doubt it’s gonna happen.”
We have a very unique perspective on whether or not TV shows should ever be made into movies, and we feel like by and large, it’s a bad idea given that most TV shows follow a very different format than movies. The stories are designed to be shorter, and don’t work better when stretched out. (See “The Simpsons” as a good example of that.) The only reason to have a movie is if you have something more to say, which is why we had no problem with the first “Sex and the City” movie, or the “Veronica Mars” movie or “Serenity.” But here? We feel like “Friday Night Lights” fans already have the ending that they want. Adding to it would only diminish the power of that conclusion and run the risk of messing it up.
