Carrie Underwood fires back at critics over ‘The Sound of Music Live’ performance

The great news for Carrie Underwood today is that “The Sound of Music Live” was in many ways an immediate success. Over 18 million people watched, and it further validated her as one of the biggest draws in the music world.

But, the bad news was that not everyone liked her. While she is a brilliant singer, her acting did at times leave something to be desired. There were moments where the gap was obvious between her and the other performers, and Twitter was of course the same sort of harsh social-media monster that it always is in the process. (Granted, this is the same site that brought us the delicious DiGiorno tweets.)

So what does Carrie have to say about all of this? In a post on her own Twitter account, she made her feelings about those who trashed her online pretty clear:

“Plain and simple: Mean people need Jesus. They will be in my prayers tonight… 1 Peter 2:1-25,”

It was probably a little unfair to begin with for anyone to expect someone with zero sort of musical theater experience on this level like Carrie to come out with a Tony-worthy performance; if anything, NBC has to be blamed for getting theater veterans like Christian Borle, Audra McDonald, and Laura Benanti in the cast and then throwing someone inexperienced into the ring with them. These are hard people to compete against when you only have a tiny amount of musical theater experience. We also personally feel like there is an important distinction that has to be made between people are just being mean for the sake of doing so, and then people who are offering up legitimate criticism of the work. Carrie is not someone that has really had to deal with much negative feedback dating back to her time on “American Idol,” so it will be interesting now to see how she moves forward.
