‘Reign’ spoilers: Amy Brenneman to play Mary’s mom on CW drama
The cast of “Reign” has just added what we personally feel to be a pretty significant amount of TV clout, at least when it comes to casting someone that many fans of network dramas have been a fan of for quite some time: Amy Brenneman. She was the star of “Judging Amy” for many years following her time on “NYPD Blue,” and until last season she was Violet on “Private Practice.”
Now, she is getting ready to wear one of the more elaborate costumes on TV as a part of The CW’s new period drama, playing the mother of Mary, Queen of Scots (played here by Adelaide Kane). Amy confirmed the news herself in a post on her Twitter account, where she had the following message to share:
“Yep, it’s true. Off to a wardrobe fitting to play the badass, Marie de Guise, on @CWReign. Watch out, @AdelaideKane, mama’s coming!”
As of right now, we would argue that “Reign” needs to do just about everything that it can in order to attract new viewers. Its ratings have been decent following “The Vampire Diaries,” but that is also the issue: It’s following “The Vampire Diaries.” The drop-off for “Beauty and the Beast” this year may make network executives worry about the show being somewhat lead-in dependent, and anything that it can do to try and draw in some unique viewers to its own program has to be considered a great thing. While “Reign” is never going to win any awards (possibly ever) when it comes to be historically accurate, it is at least least doing a good job at keeping its devoted fans entertained. The needle has not moved too much since the premiere when it comes to ratings, which to us means that viewers are at least liking what they are seeing. The real test for the show will come if it has an episode that airs later in the spring that does not have a lead-in attached to it.
For now, do you like Amy’s casting, and are you enjoying the show so far? Share what you think below!

Love it! I throw everything about history I’ve ever learned out the window & just pretend it’s a weird fluke these characters have the same names as real historical figures. Or that it’s a parallel universe. Whatever…if I can suspend my disbelief enough to buy Anne of Green Gables as an Evil Queen, then the whole premise works & I’m in! I was thrilled to hear they got a full season pickup & a big name like Amy only gives them more credibility.
Just don’t try to catch up on Reign after binge watching a season of Game of Thrones … You’ll be very, very confused!
