‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’ review: Are NeNe Leakes, Kenya Moore friends again?
Tonight’s “Real Housewives of Atlanta” episode could very well be re-titled the “Great Reconciliation,” at least when it comes to a pair of friends that have spent a good bit of time together over the past year enjoying a friendship in NeNe Leakes and Kenya Moore.
As the two made up following their drawn-out fight last week, we started to remind ourselves somewhat of what makes NeNe such a popular housewife in the first place. Is she opinionated? Sure, but so are dozens of others. It’s practically a prerequisite to getting on the show these days that you have something to say. What makes NeNe stand out a little bit more than some of the others is simply that she is a woman that will have your back and mean it. There’s an essence of loyalty there, and it proved itself tonight as these two moved on, and they can stand by each other in the middle of some of the fights with the other women. (This is a good thing, given that there are plenty of them.)
The Kenya / NeNe storyline right now is to us the most intriguing, largely because there are others bordering on being drab and repetitive. While we know that it is necessary to show us updates in Porsha Stewart’s divorce, we don’t find such a depressing thing so compelling. We prefer to think of these reality shows almost more as sitcoms, and being constantly handed depressing storylines is tough. This isn’t the sort of reality that makes television fun, even though you have to give her some credit for being bold enough to go through with putting it out there. The Joyce story with Kandi Burruss was a little more troubling, but we at least got some comedic value out of seeing a woman call a guy a gravedigger when her daughter more or less gave her a house.
This show is ultimately always going to be about the sum of its parts more so than one or two moments, and right now, it’s not hitting its stride just yet. There need to be more reasons to laugh or things that are different and worth watching. We imagine that this will be the struggle of season 5: Giving you something different that has not been shown off before. Grade: C.
