‘The Mentalist’ season 6: New episode ‘Fire and Brimstone’ not airing tonight on CBS due to NFL
Sad news for those of you who were eager to check out the new episode of “The Mentalist” Sunday night entitled “Fire and Brimstone”: Thanks to the beast known as NFL football, which continues to be prioritized over everything thanks to a billion or so people watching it, CBS decided that they would rather hold off airing an important hour of television since it would be starting so late.
The network confirmed tonight that the episode will be preempted, and a repeat will be airing in its place starting at 10:59 p.m. Eastern time. This means that had the show aired a new episode tonight, it would have been close to midnight before it was over. We do understand why the network made this decision, since they want the show to get ratings on the East Coast and the Central time zones rather than just having everyone go to bed. Will this annoy a huge percentage of the fan base? For sure, but at least the network is concerned about trying to get people to watch the show.
As for airings in other countries, we’ll have some more news on that later tonight. But if there is an airing elsewhere, we will be tagging everything appropriately so you are not spoiled in the event that you haven’t seen the episode yet. Regardless of when you end up seeing it, what we can say about this for the time being is that there is going to be some more clues dropped on the Red John investigation; after this one airs, there are only going to be two more until the case seemingly is at an end.
What’s your reaction to this news, and do you think that football is starting to become such an inconvenience that CBS should not even program Sunday nights at 10:00 p.m. anymore? Sound off in the comment box below! Every time I DVR the Mentalist I get 17 minutes of the Good Wife and never see the end of the Mentalist…What’s up with that???? I have tried to tape it later but it still happens. Did NOT get to see the ending of episode 6 Fire and Brimstone and wonder now how I can see it….

The correct episode was available on line (if you know where to look) way before the airing of the re-run. Already watched it, there a cool if unwarranted scene of Syles pouring what appears to syrup over a naked girl.

A monkey could figure out that CBS has too many shows crammed in after the football game, and that the football games need a 1/2 hour more time for the scheduling. Take out one 60 minute show out of the time slots, have a filler type program that can be played or not played depending on the game, and get your heads out of your ass!

I couldn’t care less about football, and this is just another reason why it sucks. CBS is worried about ratings, but they go and stick the Mentalist in the worst time slot ever. Way to go, boneheads. Who watches a show live anymore anyway? I set my DVR to record for 2 hours after the show because I just assume it’ll be delayed.

I purposely have this show set to record two additional hours beyond 11pm because it is ALWAYS starting late. Mentalist continually starts 30+ minutes late and you decided to NOT air it tonight because it was starting late? Stupid. Grats for being idiots CBS. I guess the guy in charge on Sundays isn’t a very smart individual. Common sense says let it roll. Those who miss it can watch it on the internet. Most people have this show set to record anyway. Ignorance….

The one thing I was looking forward to all week was this episode. The rerun airing was upsetting, but including the promo for the NEXT episode (spoiling everything that happened in the missed episode) crossed the line. Come on CBS, get your act together!

I myself am happy with that decision…I have to get up early for work and was unable to stay up and watch and now I didn’t miss anything…..although I am fed up with football and think that CBS should move The Mentalist to another day….

I despise The Goat Wife…yet I always have to watch the tail end to see the beginning of The Mentalist. To see that it was a re-run ticked me off. TV Guide and Verizon online guide both said the new episode would be on…just sux.

Instead of changing days, The Mentalist should change networks!

WTF? Did it air at all? In PST? When will it air?
I plan to watch the rest of the red john arc and then no more until march. Looking forward to a show at 10pm while football is in season is an exercise in pure frustration.
Bad call CBS. Perhaps you think you’re picking up new viewers, a doubtful assumption that will be confirmed or not by the ratings numbs, but you are certainly alienating long term fans of the show.

So many issues: 1) Start the frickin’ ballgame earlier. 2) Trim 60 Minutes down, each segment is approximately 20 minutes, one or two segments could be worked into a future episode. 3) Sat. night is already ignored by the networks, what’s next? Sun. night? 4) There are 50 other sports channels available.

Pimping the new episode all week and then slipping in the repeat without notice is the type of garbage that ought to cause CBS to be fined by the FCC or FTC or some other effing gov’t agency. Now that I have that off my chest I will return to my couch and season one of My Favorite Martian.
Losing interest quickly
November 4, 2013 @ 5:18 pm
I am a huge NFL fan and watch every game I can. The games can be followed on the net and in many other ways. The NFL will not lose viewers due to cutting airtime short. If CBS is serious about the possibility of continuing The Mentalist after Red John the viewers have to be allowed to get involved in the new plot line. I have set my DVR to record an extra half hour due to the possibility of the games, but this is ridiculous! I’m about ready to just wait till the season is available on Vudu, but I guarantee I will only be watching through the end of the Red John story line. This “tiger tiger” inside group will lose my interest quickly if CBS doesn’t take it seriously and make it a priority!

I’ve never understood why they couldn’t either do a flexible post game show or news show that could be anywhere from zero minutes long to 60 minutes long and schedule it for the 60 minutes after the game. Games almost always run over the scheduled 3 hours so they could easily fill the slot with game highlights or filler news stories and get everything back on schedule before their primetime shows start at 8pm ET. If the game ends on time, great you run all your news stories/highlights. If it ends 30 min late, then only the top 1/2. If 60 min late, don’t run it at all. Everybody wins.

It is late almost every week… why bother postponing this one? I’ve set my DVR to record a manual recording from when Mentalist is supposed to start until 90 minutes afterwards because you never know when it is actually on.

The Red John reveal is going to suck, anyways. According to the preview for the next episode, it’s down to Reede Smith, Bertram, and the Sheriff, none of whom have the charisma, personality, or intelligence to elicit the kind of devotion that Red John followers have had throughout the series. I have a hard time imagining someone killing themselves for any of those three. My top two, Haffner and Stiles, were eliminated in the unaired episode.

I know football is important but try to do something to get it on earlier. Sunday night TV watching is always an issue because football runs over into the scheduled time for some very popular programs. This is just not fair and CBS should be looking into a solution to keeps all viewers happy.

Ridiculously frustrating that I stayed up to watch this week’s unaired episode to no avail., Kept waiting for episode 6 to begin. Very disappointed and doubly disappointed they gave away the ending of episode 6 by showing previews of episode 7…. What an extra waste of valuable time.
Additionally, I tape the shows for other family. However, this week was messed up by the Good wife and then the local News. Really frustrating.
Searching on-line for episode 6 is how I learned about the airing fubar…
Between CBS and Comcast I am not impressed!

I love the show too, but the programming at CBS sucks for lack of a better word. Not everyone is up Googling or Tweeting or on Facebook. The network didn’t even have the stones to tell people ON THE NETWORK who were watching and waiting for the new episode! POOR planning and perhaps if CBS chooses to air its billion viewer NFL football then they should NOT program for the 10 p.m. slot. True Mentalist fans would change nights I believe.

Ratings are important in continuing the life of a show. I for one am glad they didn’t show it. CBS should move this show to another night. I don’t watch football but it always seems to run over and ruin the entire Sunday viewing times. I can wait to watch this show as I really do enjoy it. AS for those who blame the show’s creators for this decision realize that they do not make the schedule or the decisions. This is CBS upper echelons who make these decisions. They use the Mentalist to have ratings on Sunday after football. Its CBS not the Mentalist crew. So don’t blame them or punish them for CBS’s constant mistake over how they have handled this show.

Why not air it anyway (for your dedicated fans who took you at your word) and then just re-air it again next Sunday? oh yea, I know why….because it might skew the ratings (and we can’t have that….customers can wait)? Want to stop piracy…stop doing crap like this. torrents here we come….
I am an NFL fan, but this is ridiculous. Just allocate the proper amlunt of time for the games and stop trying to stuff shows on Sunday night when the time won’t permit it. Evrry good show is all stuffed in to the Sunday night time slots….on Monday’s during the fall, I wake up with my DVR is packed with programming that I watch trought the week .

November 4, 2013 @ 6:31 am
I agree with JEM. CBS is not going to move Mentalist to another night unless it’s profitable in some way. But they really SHOULD HAVE AIRED AN ANNOUNCEMENT so those of us that have things they would rather do with their time than try to figure out why the (re-run) show was identified with an “original air date” of 11/13/13, and wonder if the local broadcast CBS station screwed up, we missed it, and we’re going to have to find and watch the episode online. WTF? It’s simple courtesy…..makes viewers think you care.

My husband and I do not have cable or satellite because of where we live. So we drove an hour to our son’s house to watch it. We expected it to start at 9:00 but the TV listing said 9:30. At 9:30 The Good Wife came on with a message at the bottom saying The Mentalist would be on at 10:00. At 10:00, we were beyond disbelief as Rigsby was arrested AGAIN. Seriously? So here it is, 11:30 and I am just getting home. Not cool, CBS; not cool.

I knew this kind of thing was going to happen when they first announced that The Mentalist was being moved to the Sunday night death slot. The Mentalist is one of CBS’s best shows, yet they seem hellbent on killing it for some reason. They need to move the dumb shows they have on Thursday night to a different night and put The Mentalist back on Thursday nights in its rightful time slot.

CBS had a banner alert saying that The Mentalist was starting at 10:59 PM. They didn’t even have the courtesy to put a banner alert on the screen saying it would be a rerun and not the one originally scheduled. It is a shame that they don’t give a dam about this series or their viewers by acting like this. It was bad enough when they moved it the show it’s old spot mid week spot to Death Valley on Sunday nights. That coupled with the delayed starting times because of football season is totally unacceptable!
Their viewers deserve better treatment!!!

Is it just being pushed a week or will we miss it again? I agree with everyone else…60 minutes kept their format and The Good Wife kept theirs, yet you chose to piss off your viewers, while not only failing to air the episode, but failing to disclose when the show WILL actually be aired…all for ratings? I would be so much more peeved over missing the show because I didn’t know when it was re-scheduled vs. staying up LESS than an hour later…poor decision making by CBS!

CBS has been doing this Sunday night b.s. forever. I remember being a kid in the 1970’s/80’s and my parents being ticked off, repeatedly, because “60 Minutes” got pre-empted. With the advent and popularity of video recorders and now DVR, it is always dreadful to try to record something on CBS on Sunday night only to find out later that you have half an hour of something you have no interest in (such as “The Amazing Race” or “Undercover Boss”… two shows I have *only* ever seen in this manner) and then the first half of the show you really want to watch. I used to set extended mode to tape as much of the night as possible, hoping to catch the one thing I wanted somewhere in the middle. CBS should either stop airing shows on Sunday night during football season or, better yet, should automatically repeat their scheduled Sunday night lineup every Monday morning starting at, say, 1am (and 1am *exactly* – no delays!) so people can just set their devices to record their shows then. I know the networks want people to watch live and sit through commercials without fast-forwarding, but is there still even a majority that does that? If there is, there won’t be much longer! Put all the shows OnDemand, online, iTunes, and with repeat viewings at odd hours. (OnDemand and online outlets like Hulu can both force commercials, btw.) The age of everyone watching at the same time is over, though I do miss watching “60 Minutes” with my whole family every Sunday that there were no sports events to put it past my bedtime.

This is a load of bs. How many time have they pushed the time back ‘because of football’ and now this tonight? Why even bother having a show on Sunday nights then if you’re worried about football on another channel or an earlier game ran a little late so your schedule is behind?
jo
November 4, 2013 @ 4:48 am
Doesn’t sound like anyone actually enjoys The Good Wife, and I don’t think that CBS is the channel most people choose to watch the football game on. The Mentalist appeals to a younger and wider audience, so why not give it the better time slot and push back The Good Wife? It only gets ratings because people are either waiting to watch the mentalist or they forgot to shut the boob tube off when the game was over, other than that there would be no ratings for that boring and slow show.

Interesting. I like The Good Wife. In fact, I think it’s a better show than The Mentalist in terms of acting and writing. Still, after recording both shows, I usually want to watch The Mentalist first… I never thought about it before, but The Mentalist feels like a guilty pleasure and is just more fun to watch. The Mentalist should definitely be aired before The Good Wife, IMO. Unfortunately, since the network system is so broken, TGW would loose ratings opposite the other “intelligent” shows that all go on at 10pm on Sunday night and might not survive.

The RJ storyline has passed the point of logic and, more importantly, has passed the point of reasonable suspension of belief. It is now into the area of complete unbelievable crap. I hope you get violently ill.

The thing is, there are several different writers that write the scripts for this show, not just Heller. He mainly just writes the Red John episodes.

Screw you CBS. I have now decided to stop watching The Mentalist. I stayed up just for it and you have screwed me (would use stronger word if not for moderation). I am now done. I hope your numbers tank you morons. I will not me watching any CBS for that matter. FU!

The Mentalist show is what will suffer by your attitude not CBS. Ratings are important to continuing a show. The audience does not get paid any attention to unless it is a big audience. So you are only hurting your own show rather than getting CBS to behave properly towards its audience. I will always watch the Mentalist as the writing and acting is the best on TV.
