CBS gives ‘Mom,’ ‘The Crazy Ones,’ and ‘The Millers’ full seasons
CBS may not have a breakout hit comedy yet of the fall season, but after canceling “We Are Men” after only two episodes, the network is showing now that they have no problem giving some of their other programming a little bit of love. Therefore you can stop asking “is ‘Mom’ going to be canceled,’ or ‘will we be getting more Robin Williams?’
In a statement today, it was confirmed that “Mom,” “The Crazy Ones,” and “The Millers” are all getting full seasons totaling 22 episodes. This means that there will only be one hole to fill on the comedy lineup all season, and that is the spot on Mondays currently occupied by “The Big Bang Theory” (expect a change to come there in midseason). The three shows have at least been solid over the past several weeks, with “The Millers” being the biggest surprise. Last night, for example, the show actually improved in the 18-49 demographic, showing that it may not be solely dependent on “The Big Bang Theory” for whatever numbers it pulls. So long as it continues to be above a 3.0, the network has to be reasonably happy with it.
Quality-wise, this is also good news as both “The Millers” and “The Crazy Ones” have improved pretty dramatically since their original pilots aired earlier this fall. This often happens to new shows trying to find themselves in their early going, but you are starting to get a little bit more of an impression as to what each one of these shows is trying to be. The other benefit, strange as it may seem, is that “The Crazy Ones” could be a perfect show to get all sorts of headlines in the future. Who wouldn’t want to guest-star alongside Robin Williams, and they can do some great things with real-life products in an effort to convince people to tune in live and watch.
One final thing that we’ll say is that the pickup for “The Millers” may help to end the streak of woe for Will Arnett. “Up All Night” and “Running Wilde” were both disappointments, and this is his opportunity to really prove to be capable of carrying a series on his own.
