David Letterman extends ‘Late Show’ contract until 2015

David Letterman is still not going anywhere in the near future. The legendary host of “The Late Show” has been on the air in between CBS and NBC for a record of over three decades, and there is no sign of it stopping for at least another two years.

Sources have now confirmed that Letterman has inked a brand-new extension on his current deal that will keep him on the network until the end of 2015. This means that he will have a full year and a half of battling the younger generation, which includes Jimmy Fallon on NBC and Jimmy Kimmel over on CBS.

So what could be the reason for this deal? In addition to the network wanting to keep Letterman around with his solid fan following, CBS may think that some of Leno’s older viewers could navigate over to his longtime rival rather than watch someone in Fallon who caters more to a younger crowd. Letterman also has a few other key attributes here in that he is an extremely strong interviewer, and he also brings a much more old-school vibe for viewers who care very little about social media, mobile apps, or anything else that defines the modern era of technology. It’s a throwback when almost everything else is so desperately trying to look forward.

The good news for CBS here is that they don’t have to spend any more time right now looking for a successor. There is no word on if Craig Ferguson would be the heir apparent to Dave’s show, but we hope not if for no other reason than that he is best with the sort of weird humor that you could never get away with earlier in the night.
