While we may be waiting for several months to see the NCIS season 24 premiere, there is still big news to report regarding the future.

According to a report from Deadline, the upcoming batch of episodes is going to feature the return of Michael Weatherly as Tony DiNozzo in what is being reported as a “season-long arc.” This comes on the heels of the NCIS: Tony & Ziva spin-off being canceled at Paramount+, and it remains to be seen whether or not Cote de Pablo will return to the crime drama, as well.

Why bring Tony back at this point? Some of it may be tied to nostalgia, as this allows the show to get more people watching who enjoyed the earlier seasons. Another part of it may just be that there is a really interesting story where his services could be utilized. We do tend to think the next chapter of the show is going to look at least partially different from what we’ve seen over the past several years — remember that season 23 killed off Leon Vance (Rocky Carroll), and there is no evidence that the show plans to make a replacement Director a permanent fixture. This could be more about the agents or in the case of Tony, a former agent who has kept ties to McGee and other people over the years.

The news of Weatherly’s return comes a brief period of time after we heard about Mark Harmon coming on board NCIS: Origins in a substantial on-screen way. He has always been an executive producer and narrator but now, you will see the present-day Gibbs in more of a larger form.
