After one fantastic season over at Starz, it is unfortunately the end of the line already for Spartacus: House Of Ashur. According to a new report from Deadline, the alternate-history series will not be moving forward.

Are we surprised by this? Both yes and no. In terms of the show’s commercial success, you could somewhat see it coming. While the new show did have a dedicated fan following, it also failed to really match the high highs from the original show. Meanwhile, you could also argue that it was a little bit of a surprise that Starz picked it up in the first place given that there are different audience demographics they are looking for now than in the show’s heyday. They really banked on nostalgia from the series’ original fanbase turning this into a hit and based on the news today, that was simply not enough.

In the end, though, we are just glad that Spartacus: House Of Ashur existed, given that this is such a fun world to watch the writers and producers play around in. We got to see some great character development, and the disappointment comes in the idea that there was potential for a lot more to be done here.

Our hope at the very least is that the one-and-done nature of this show does not deter the folks at Starz from picking up something similar down the line — or, for somewhat similar properties to exist elsewhere. In general, one of the things that we are the most curious about here is whether or not the upcoming The Odyssey is going to lead to some other programs within this space eventually seeing the light of day. Entertainment, after all, does tend to follow trends to a certain degree — wouldn’t it also here?
