Sheriff Country season 1 finale: Is Santos Mickey Fox’s mother?

Heading into the Sheriff Country season 1 finale on CBS, it was absolutely easy to imagine that there would be a jaw-dropping conclusion. This is a show that had already delivered one courtesy of Alec just one week ago, so why not keep that going?

We will admit that it is hardly a shock to see most of the loose ends revolving around Alec be tied up, or that Mickey Fox managed to outsmart him in the end. She can breathe easier thanks to that and really, the major cliffhanger here was far more personal than it was professional: As it turns out, Santos is actually Mickey’s mother! (What makes this all the more juicy is the professional connection that may still exist here due to future investigations.)

Speaking to TV Insider, Sheriff Country showrunner Matt Lopez explains having that moment be the end of the season.

We are told, I believe, if I’m not mistaken, as early as the Season 1 pilot, it’s pretty clear that Mickey’s mom, in her mind, is dead. And all season long, there are sprinkled little Easter eggs. And then as we come down the stretch of the season, we see Wes visiting the grave. We see Mickey telling Luna in Episode 118 sort of her origin story and how her mother died in the Edgewater County jail while awaiting trial. And then obviously, what we learn and what we will in Season 2 have to unpack is that is not true. Both Mickey and Wes do not know this incredible secret that Mickey’s mother remains alive to this day and in fact is the woman who has been called into Edgewater to investigate this level of corruption.

Obviously, this is a storyline that we imagine the writers are going to run hard with in season 2, and for some incredibly good reasons. They have, after all, so much good stuff that they could explore here moving forward!
